Foliation: ff. 245* + 279 (+ 4 unfoliated paper flyleaves at the beginning + 2 at the end); ff. 89-91, 148, and 270-272 have paper foldouts at their outer margins; ff. 102-103, 104-105, 106-107 are large folded paper sheets; ff. 14, 53, 132, 135, 139, 140, 142, 144, 146, 149, 266 are small strips of paper; 1 unfoliated paper strip pasted onto f. 130, which is a modern paper leaf; 2 unfoliated paper strips between f. 111 and f. 112 with notes added by the British Museum; 1 unfoliated paper pastedown (bibliographical notes) on f. [iii]recto and 1 (notes of repair) on f. [281]recto.

Ralph Starkey (d. 1628) of Darley Hall in Oulton, owned and partially written by him: wrote items 2, 4, 42, 53-54, and 74; his hand is on items 1, 3, *4, 5, 7, 11-12, 17, 22-25, 28, 29 (?), 32-34, 39-40, 45 (?), 52, 56, 70, 85-86, and f. 266, which is a leaf interpolated into item 80 [the item is as listed in the Catalogue of the Harleian Manuscripts (1808), I, pp. 364-67] (see Watson, The Library of Sir Simonds D'Ewes (1966), pp. 108-109); acquired from him in 1628 by Sir Simonds D’Ewes (see Wright, Fontes Harleiani (1972), p. 314).
Sir Simonds D’Ewes (b. 1602, d. 1650), 1st baronet, diarist, antiquary, and friend of Sir Robert Cotton (see Wright, Fontes Harleiani (1972), p. 131): his hand is on ff. 121v (item 49), and 263v (item 79) [the items are as listed in the Catalogue of the Harleian Manuscripts (1808), I, pp. 364-67]; perhaps recorded in his catalogues as A.133 (see Watson, The Library of Sir Simonds D'Ewes (1966), pp. 108-109).
Sir Simonds D’Ewes (d. 1722), 3rd baronet and grandson of the former: inherited and later sold the D’Ewes library to Robert Harley on 4 October 1705 for £450.
The Harley Collection, formed by Robert Harley (b. 1661, d. 1724), 1st earl of Oxford and Mortimer, politician, and Edward Harley (b. 1689, d. 1741), 2nd earl of Oxford and Mortimer, book collector and patron of the arts.
Edward Harley bequeathed the library to his widow, Henrietta Cavendish, née Holles (b. 1694, d. 1755) during her lifetime and thereafter to their daughter, Margaret Cavendish Bentinck (b. 1715, d. 1785), duchess of Portland; the manuscripts were sold by the Countess and the Duchess in 1753 to the nation for £10,000 (a fraction of their contemporary value) under the Act of Parliament that also established the British Museum; the Harley manuscripts form one of the foundation collections of the British Library.
