Robert Vawdrey [Vaudrey] of the Reddinges (fl. mid 16th century), vice-chamberlain of Chester: according to f. 1v and f. 2r, wrote the manuscript during the 3rd and 4th year of the reign of Mary I of England and Philip of Spain [July 1555-July 1557] (not in Wright, Fontes Harleiani (1972)).
Robert Bossevile (late 16th century), owned in 1593: according to a note on f. 1*recto: ‘Delyvered to Mr Hare to be redelivered to Raphe Bossevile sonne and heire of Henrie Bossevile esquire deceased after he shall come of full age, when he shall demaunde the same . 9 Aprilis .1593. Robert Bossevile’ (not in Wright, Fontes Harleiani (1972)).
‘Mr Hare’, received from Robert Bossevile in 1593 for Ralph Bossevile upon reaching adulthood (not in Wright, Fontes Harleiani (1972)).
Ralph Bossevile (fl. late 16th century), owned in the late 16th or early 17th century: received the manuscript upon reaching adulthood according to a note on f. 1*recto (not in Wright, Fontes Harleiani (1972)).
Edward Stillingfleet (b. 1635, d. 1699), Bishop of Worcester: his manuscripts were bought for £175 in 1707 by Robert Harley (see Wright, Fontes Harleiani (1972), p. 316).
The Harley Collection, formed by Robert Harley (b. 1661, d. 1724), 1st earl of Oxford and Mortimer, politician, and Edward Harley (b. 1689, d. 1741), 2nd earl of Oxford and Mortimer, book collector and patron of the arts.
Edward Harley bequeathed the library to his widow, Henrietta Cavendish, née Holles (b. 1694, d. 1755) during her lifetime and thereafter to their daughter, Margaret Cavendish Bentinck (b. 1715, d. 1785), duchess of Portland; the manuscripts were sold by the Countess and the Duchess in 1753 to the nation for £10,000 (a fraction of their contemporary value) under the Act of Parliament that also established the British Museum; the Harley manuscripts form one of the foundation collections of the British Library.
