Folio manuscript volume containing a draft copy of the memoirs of the Duke of Hamilton, by Gilbert Burnet, with autograph corrections. Titled 'Memoires of the life and actions of James, Duke of Hamiltoun etc' [James Hamilton, 1st Duke of Hamilton], and compiled by Gilbert Burnet using the original papers of the Hamilton family. It was first published in 1677.
The manuscript is divided into 5 books by the author:
- ff. 5-18: Of the Duke’s first appearance at court (following a short relation of his father’s death, and character), and of his employment in Germany.
- ff. 18v-110: Of his negotiation in Scotland, when he was commissioner in the years, 1638 & 1639.
- ff. 110v-151v: Of his actions after he laid down his commission, till he was sent to Scotland by the King, July 1642.
- ff. 152-199v: Of his affairs and behaviour in Scotland from July 1642 to his imprisonment.
- ff. 200-308: Of his actions after his enlargement to his death; to which shall be subjoined his character, and his brothers.
Copies of letters from various figures including Charles I can be found throughout the volume.
At the front of the volume is a note to the reader.

This manuscript previously belonged to Edward Stillingfleet.
The Harley Collection, formed by Robert Harley (1661-1724), 1st earl of Oxford and Mortimer, politician, and Edward Harley (1689-1741), 2nd earl of Oxford and Mortimer, book collector and patron of the arts.
Edward Harley bequeathed the library to his widow, Henrietta Cavendish, née Holles (1694-1755) during her lifetime and thereafter to their daughter, Margaret Cavendish Bentinck (1715-1785), duchess of Portland; the manuscripts were sold by the Countess and the Duchess in 1753 to the nation for £10,000 under the Act of Parliament that also established the British Museum; the Harley manuscripts form one of the foundation collections of the British Library.
