ff. 1r-2v: A letter from Henry Hastings, Earl of Huntingdon and Lord Lieutenant of all the Northern Counties, to Thomas Scrope, 10th Baron Scrope of Bolton, Lord Warden of the Western Marches concerning the inconveniences relating to his wardenship, Scots abroad and subjects at home; dated 29 September 1593.
ff. 3r-79v: Letters from Sir William Bowes (d. 1611) to the Lord Treasurer Burleigh, Sir Robert Cecil, Queen Elizabeth I, and others; dated 1596-1597; also featuring papers relating to Sir William Bowes and Robert Bowes at the Scots Court.
The manuscript contains a number of additions:
f. 1*recto: Practice letters and titles: ‘Concerninge Border matters’; one dated to 1597.

Provenance:
Edward Stillingfleet (b. 1635, d. 1699), Bishop of Worcester: his manuscripts were bought for £175 in 1707 by Robert Harley (see Wright, Fontes Harleiani (1972), p. 316).
The Harley Collection, formed by Robert Harley (b. 1661, d. 1724), 1st earl of Oxford and Mortimer, politician, and Edward Harley (b. 1689, d. 1741), 2nd earl of Oxford and Mortimer, book collector and patron of the arts.
Edward Harley bequeathed the library to his widow, Henrietta Cavendish, née Holles (b. 1694, d. 1755) during her lifetime and thereafter to their daughter, Margaret Cavendish Bentinck (b. 1715, d. 1785), duchess of Portland; the manuscripts were sold by the Countess and the Duchess in 1753 to the nation for £10,000 (a fraction of their contemporary value) under the Act of Parliament that also established the British Museum; the Harley manuscripts form one of the foundation collections of the British Library.
