  • ff. 1-2: A speech to Queen Elizabeth I, given when the citizens of London presented Mr Cuthbert Buckle, their Mayor-elect, to her majesty for her approbation.
  • ff. 2-4: A speech from when Mr John Spencer, Lord Mayor-elect of London, was brought to be sworn and recorded. Begins ‘It is full three years…’.
  • ff. 5-5v: Mr John Moore’s speech before King James I, from when the King visited Winchester.
  • f. 5v: A short speech to the Queen [Anne of Denmark], when the mayor and citizens of Winchester presented her with a cup.
  • ff. 6-14v: A relation of the arrangements for the marriage which was going to be made between Henry, Prince of England, and the Infanta-major; and afterward with the Infanta-minor, 1611. Written by John Digby, later Earl of Bristol.

This manuscript previously belonged to Edward Stillingfleet.

The Harley Collection, formed by Robert Harley (1661-1724), 1st earl of Oxford and Mortimer, politician, and Edward Harley (1689-1741), 2nd earl of Oxford and Mortimer, book collector and patron of the arts.

Edward Harley bequeathed the library to his widow, Henrietta Cavendish, née Holles (1694-1755) during her lifetime and thereafter to their daughter, Margaret Cavendish Bentinck (1715-1785), duchess of Portland; the manuscripts were sold by the Countess and the Duchess in 1753 to the nation for £10,000 under the Act of Parliament that also established the British Museum; the Harley manuscripts form one of the foundation collections of the British Library.
