Duodecimo manuscript volume, written and painted by Mr John Withie.
The volume contains 'the names and Armes of them that hath beene Alldermen [Aldermen] of the warde of Alldersgate [Aldersgate] since the tyme of King Henry VI, beginninge at the 39 yeare of his Reigne [1460-1461], untill this present yeare of our Lorde 1616. Which names and Armes weere collected out of recorde, 1616'.
The volume begins with the arms of the Blessed Trinity, followed by the arms of the City of London, then the arms of the aldermen.

The Harley Collection, formed by Robert Harley (1661-1724), 1st earl of Oxford and Mortimer, politician, and Edward Harley (1689-1741), 2nd earl of Oxford and Mortimer, book collector and patron of the arts.
Edward Harley bequeathed the library to his widow, Henrietta Cavendish, née Holles (1694-1755) during her lifetime and thereafter to their daughter, Margaret Cavendish Bentinck (1715-1785), duchess of Portland; the manuscripts were sold by the Countess and the Duchess in 1753 to the nation for £10,000 under the Act of Parliament that also established the British Museum; the Harley manuscripts form one of the foundation collections of the British Library.
