Notebook of Richard Symonds written while accompanying the King and the royal army, from leaving the King’s winter quarters at Oxford in April 1645, passing through the Midlands and Wales, up to their arrival in Yorkshire in August. Records the progress of the army and principal events, including the Battle of Naseby 14 June 1645, with several lists of garrisons in various counties. Also includes notes on church monuments and glass, particularly heraldic, seen along the way, illustrated by sketches.
Table of churches described in the notebook on ff. 3v-4r.
Title page on f. 4v: ‘The marches & moovings & Actions of the Royall Army His Ma[jes]tie being personally present. From his coming out of his winter quarter Quarter [sic] at Oxford, May 7 [Aprill 24 cancelled] 1645 till the end of August following’.

- The Harley Collection, formed by Robert Harley (1661-1724), 1st earl of Oxford and Mortimer, politician, and Edward Harley (1689-1741), 2nd earl of Oxford and Mortimer, book collector and patron of the arts. Edward Harley bequeathed the library to his widow, Henrietta Cavendish, née Holles (1694-1755) during her lifetime and thereafter to their daughter, Margaret Cavendish Bentinck (1715-1785), duchess of Portland; the manuscripts were sold by the Countess and the Duchess in 1753 to the nation for £10,000 under the Act of Parliament that also established the British Museum; the Harley manuscripts form one of the foundation collections of the British Library.
