A partial border in blue and red with penwork decoration in red (f. 15r). Puzzle initials in red and blue and plain initials in blue with pen-work decoration in red, occasionally with hybrid creatures but usually in foliate design and extending into the borders. Rubrics and paraphs in red and blue.

Dimensions: 90 x 65 mm (text space: 65 x 40 mm).
Foliation: ff. 271 (+ 1 unfoliated medieval parchment flyleaf and 4 unfoliated modern paper flyleaves at the beginning and the end; + 1 unfoliated leaf after ff. 14 and 269); ff. 269-271 are medieval parchment flyleaves.
Collation: Quires of 12, with horizontal catchwords in the lower right corner of the last verso of each quire.
Script: Gothic cursive (Anglicana).
Binding: British Museum, rebound in 1966.

Origin: England (possibly Suffolk)
Provenance:
? John Best, 15th century: inscribed 'Johannes best' (ff. 14v, 152r).
Late 15th or early 16th century: inscribed with three letter 'S's, the words 'sciant presentes et futuri' and a partial alphabet (f. 269v).
15th-16th century: erased inscription 'Statuta Johannes [...]nyer'.
The Harley Collection, formed by Robert Harley (b. 1661, d. 1724), 1st earl of Oxford and Mortimer, politician, and Edward Harley (b. 1689, d. 1741), 2nd earl of Oxford and Mortimer, book collector and patron of the arts.
Edward Harley bequeathed the library to his widow, Henrietta Cavendish, née Holles (b. 1694, d. 1755) during her lifetime and thereafter to their daughter, Margaret Cavendish Bentinck (b. 1715, d. 1785), duchess of Portland; the manuscripts were sold by the Countess and the Duchess in 1753 to the nation for £10,000 (a fraction of their contemporary value) under the Act of Parliament that also established the British Museum; the Harley manuscripts form one of the foundation collections of the British Library.
