Notebook of Richard Symonds written while accompanying the King and the royal army from leaving Cornwall, 5 September 1644 to 23 November 1644. Records the progress of the army and principal events. Interspersed with documents relating to the case of the Lord Wilmot, and notes on church monuments and glass, particularly heraldic, seen along the way, illustrated by sketches.
Contents include:
- Title page: ‘A Continuation of the Actions Moovings, and Marches of his Ma[jes]tie w[i]th his Armie, from the time they left Cornwall, Sept 5o 1644’.
- ff. 8-21 and ff. 65-80: Notes on church monuments in Devon, Somerset, Dorset, Wiltshire, and Berkshire, especially the Cathedrals of Exeter (ff. 8-21) & Salisbury (ff. 65-80), illustrated with sketches.
- f. 22v, f. 33v: Sketches of Cornets, in the King’s Army.
- f. 28v: ‘A Coppy of the late Earl of Essex his March from St Albans unto Oxford &c. 1644. As it was found in one of the pocket of their Soldiers at Lostwithiel’.
- f. 38v: The Petition of the Officers of the King’s Old Horse, August 8, 1644, to the King, asking the reasons for his removal of the Lord Wilmot their Lieutenant-General.
- f. 39: The King’s answer to that petition, dated August 12, declaring the reasons for removing the Lord Wilmot.
- ff. 40-41r: The Charge against Lord Wilmot.
- ff. 41r-43r: The Lord Wilmot’s reply: ‘An Answere to a Declaration & Charge ag[ains]t the Lord Viscount Wilmott’.
- ff. 105v-106r: Table of churches described in the notebook.
- ff. 107-108r: List of the Knights Batchelors made by King Charles, since October 1644.

The Harley Collection, formed by Robert Harley (1661-1724), 1st earl of Oxford and Mortimer, politician, and Edward Harley (1689-1741), 2nd earl of Oxford and Mortimer, book collector and patron of the arts.
Edward Harley bequeathed the library to his widow, Henrietta Cavendish, née Holles (1694-1755) during her lifetime and thereafter to their daughter, Margaret Cavendish Bentinck (1715-1785), duchess of Portland; the manuscripts were sold by the Countess and the Duchess in 1753 to the nation for £10,000 under the Act of Parliament that also established the British Museum; the Harley manuscripts form one of the foundation collections of the British Library.
