ff. 1r-66r: Pedigrees and coats of arms from the Visitation-book of Oxfordshire made by Richard Lee, Portcullis Pursuivant, in 1574; copied by John Withie in 1621; beginning with the arms of the city of Oxford, the seals of Witney and Burford; including a text on the foundation of the ‘Universities in Oxforde’; the arms of Woodstock; and the seal of Banbury (another copy of the Visitation-book is extant in Harley MS 808).
ff. 67v-73r: ‘Armes of Bedfordshire’; dated 1634.
ff. 73v-81r: ‘Armes of Buckinghamshiere’; dated 1634.

Provenance:
John Withie (b. 1593, d. ? 1678), arms painter for the College of Arms, copied by him in 1621: according to his inscription on f. 1v (see Wright, Fontes Harleiani (1972), p. 357).
John Spicer: acquired from John Withie (see Wright, Fontes Harleiani (1972), p. 311).
The Harley Collection, formed by Robert Harley (b. 1661, d. 1724), 1st earl of Oxford and Mortimer, politician, and Edward Harley (b. 1689, d. 1741), 2nd earl of Oxford and Mortimer, book collector and patron of the arts.
Edward Harley bequeathed the library to his widow, Henrietta Cavendish, née Holles (b. 1694, d. 1755) during her lifetime and thereafter to their daughter, Margaret Cavendish Bentinck (b. 1715, d. 1785), duchess of Portland; the manuscripts were sold by the Countess and the Duchess in 1753 to the nation for £10,000 (a fraction of their contemporary value) under the Act of Parliament that also established the British Museum; the Harley manuscripts form one of the foundation collections of the British Library.
