Copy of the Visitation book of Leicestershire 1619, as made by Sampson Lennard, Bluemantle and Augustine Vincent, Rouge Rose, Marshalls and Deputies to William Camden, Clarenceux. Copy in the hand of Jacob Chaloner (1586-1631), arms painter, with some later additions to the pedigrees. Excludes the seals, church notes, extracts from records, and other proofs.
Includes a list of Justices of the Peace in Leicestershire 1610, with many of their arms. Includes the arms and seals of the town of Leicester, tricked by another hand. With an index of family surnames (ff. 116v-117r).
f. 117v: Undated note by Thomas Babb to a person of worship who owed him money upon bond.

The Harley Collection, formed by Robert Harley (1661-1724), 1st earl of Oxford and Mortimer, politician, and Edward Harley (1689-1741), 2nd earl of Oxford and Mortimer, book collector and patron of the arts.
Edward Harley bequeathed the library to his widow, Henrietta Cavendish, née Holles (1694-1755) during her lifetime and thereafter to their daughter, Margaret Cavendish Bentinck (1715-1785), duchess of Portland; the manuscripts were sold by the Countess and the Duchess in 1753 to the nation for £10,000 (a fraction of their contemporary value) under the Act of Parliament that also established the British Museum; the Harley manuscripts form one of the foundation collections of the British Library.
Former owner: William Shires, arms painter of Southwark (Wright, Fontes Harleiani, p. 304).
