This prayer book contains items that are typical of a Book of Hours, including a Calendar, the Hours of the Virgin, the Seven Penitential Psalms, and a Litany of Saints. However, its larger part comprises prayers in Latin and Anglo Norman that are not organised according to the canonical hours. Many of these feature introductions (rubrics) that explain when, how and why the prayers should be recited. Among these is an Anglo-Norman prayer for women in childbirth (ff. 176v-178v) that invokes the Incarnation and Passion for relief of pain and a good outcome. Another copy of the same prayer is extant in the early 14th-century DuBois Hours (New York, Pierpoint Morgan Library, M 700, ff. 41v-144v). However, only in this manuscript is the prayer attributed to Matilda Becket, who is not named but merely identified as the mother of St Thomas Becket (b. 1118, d. 1170), Archbishop of Canterbury [see Dean and Boulton, Anglo-Norman Literature (1999), p. 452 (no. 871)].
Entries in red ink in the Calendar suggest that the manuscript was originally made for a member of the Percy family, Earls of Northumberland, around 1370. For this reason, the manuscript is known as the 'Percy Hours' (not to be confused with Add MS 89379, which is also known as the 'Percy Hours').

Decoration:
Large (4-6 line) decorated initials (ff. 1r, 31r, 34r, 36r, 38r, 40r, 41v, 46r, 54r, 65r, 79r). Large (2-6 lines) decorated initials in gold set against ground of blue or red with white tracery, throughout. Versal initials (1 line) in gold or blue with contrasting black or red penwork decoration. Rubrics in red. Line fillers in blue. A sketch of the martyrdom of St Sebastian has been added to the upper margin of f. 236v.

[iv]recto (bibliographical notes); modern foliation in pencil and pen throughout (ff. '1-240').
Collation: i8-2 (i-iii cancelled), ii-iv12, v12-1 (xii cancelled), vi12-1 (xii cancelled), vii10, viii12-1 (v cancelled), ix12-1 (viii cancelled), x-xv12, xvi12-1 (v cancelled), xvii-xx12, xxi12-4 (viii, x-xii cancelled), xxii6-1 (iii cancelled); quire signatures in Roman numerals at the end of gatherings; each quire has been mounted separately onto a paper guard.
Script: English Gothic cursive bookhand (littera textualis semiquadrata formata).

Percy family, Earls of Northumberland, owned c. 1370: their obits in the Calendar suggest that the manuscript was made for them.
Henry Sandy, owned in the 16th century: his ex-libris on f. 53v: 'Thys ys Harry Sand hys bocke the which cost him a crone [? Received] Thomas Sandy [...]’; and f. 237v: 'Henry Sandy est possessor lyber meus' (see Wright, Fontes Harleiani (1972), p. 296).
John Sandy, owned in the 16th century: his ex-libris on f. 237v: ‘Johannes Sandy est possessor liber meus’ (see Wright, Fontes Harleiani (1972), p. 296).
? Phillip Smith, 16th century: his name inscribed in the lower margin of f. 127v: 'Phillip Smith' (not in Wright, Fontes Harleiani (1972)).
Richard Spercheford, Archdeacon of Salopia (1537-1560), owned until 1560: given by him as a gift to William Barnes in 1560 according to an inscription on f. 236r [see below] (previously unidentified, but his name is listed in Wright, Fontes Harleiani (1972), p. 311, where his title is erroneously transcribed as 'armiger' [esquire]).
Willliam Barnes, owned from 1560: received as a gift from Richard Spercheford as recorded in William’s inscription on f. 236r: ‘Ex dono M[agistri] Ric[hard]i Sp[er]cheford Arch[idiaco]ni Salop[iensi]s mihi Guil[el]mo Barnes ix die Junij Anno domini 1560’ (see Wright, Fontes Harleiani (1972), p. 64).

The Harley Collection, formed by Robert Harley (b. 1661, d. 1724), 1st earl of Oxford and Mortimer, politician, and Edward Harley (b. 1689, d. 1741), 2nd earl of Oxford and Mortimer, book collector and patron of the arts. Harley shelfmarks '68.A.10 / 1260' in black ink and '9/I A' in black ink and pencil on f. 1r.
Edward Harley bequeathed the library to his widow, Henrietta Cavendish, née Holles (b. 1694, d. 1755) during her lifetime and thereafter to their daughter, Margaret Cavendish Bentinck (b. 1715, d.1785), duchess of Portland; the manuscripts were sold by the Countess and the Duchess in 1753 to the nation for £10,000 (a fraction of their contemporary value) under the Act of Parliament that also established the British Museum; the Harley manuscripts form one of the foundation collections of the British Library.
