Account of combat between Daniel Archdeacon and Francis Mowbray
- Scope & Content:
-
Quarto manuscript volume, titled 'A true report of sundry memorable accidents befalling Mr Daniel Archdeacon before, and after the combat appointed between him, and Francis Moubray'.
Transcribed on f. 3, underneath the title, is 'Written first in French by a well wisher of Mr. Daniel Archdeacon, and sent to another deare friend of his, and synce translated in to English by a well wisher of his, and to that honest cause - veritas odium parit'.
Mr Daniel Archdeacon was a fencing master, originally from Messina, Sicily, who lived in London. Daniel Archdeacon accused Mr Francis Mowbray, or Moubray, of treason after hearing him utter threatening words against the King. A judicial combat was arranged for 5 January 1603 between the two men but never took place after further witnesses came forward. Francis Mowbray later died whilst trying to escape from his imprisonment in Edinburgh Castle.
