This manuscript preserves the work known as Historia Iosephi de Bello Iudaico et Excidio Urbis Hierosolymitanae (The History of Josephus on the Jewish wars and the Destruction of the City of Jerusalem), a 4th-century adaptation of Josephus (b. 37, d. 100)'s Jewish Wars attributed to Hegesippus, a name which may have been a misspelling of ‘Josephus’.
Contents:
ff. 1r-91v: Pseudo-Hegesippus: Historia Iosephi de Bello Iudaico et Excidio Urbis Hierosolymitanae, lacking parts of the last chapter (5.53), beginning: ‘Incipiunt quinque libri Egesippi natione Iudei de excidio Iudeorum’.
Decoration:
One large arabesque initial in red, green and light brown (f. 68r). Two large initials in light brown or green with penwork decoration in alternate colours and with some red (f. 1r). Two large initials in red or in light brown with minor penwork decoration in the same colour and one with a reserved line (ff. 31v, 43v). Simple initials in red, blue, green or light brown. Display script in red, green and light brown for rubrics and words following large initials (f. 1r). The initial on f. 56r has not been filled in. Rough sketches in crayon in the margins of f. 67v.

Materials: Parchment.
Dimensions: 295 x 195 mm (text space: 215 x 135 mm, in 2 columns).
Foliation: ff. 1* + 92 ( + 1 unfoliated paper flyleaf at the beginning + 2 unfoliated paper flyleaves at the end); f. 1* is a bifolium of a 9th- or 10th-century Missal; f. 69 is a fragment; f. 92 is a fragment of a leaf from a late 14th- or early 15th-century English manuscript containing liturgical lections for the feast of St Augustine of Hippo; f. 92v was once pasted on a wooden board. Trapezoid parchment tabs or bookmarks are attached to the fore-edge (ff. 43r-43v, 56r-56v, 68r-68v), marking the beginning of each new book (one is now lacking on f. 31).

'James Pearse', unidentified: his name ('Liber Jacobi Pearse') inscribed in a 17th-century script (f. 1r).
'Vincent Pearse', unidentified: his name ('Vincent Perce') inscribed in a 17th-century script (f. 3v).
The Harley Collection, formed by Robert Harley (b. 1661, d. 1724), 1st earl of Oxford and Mortimer, politician, and Edward Harley (b. 1689, d. 1741), 2nd earl of Oxford and Mortimer, book collector and patron of the arts.
Edward Harley bequeathed the library to his widow, Henrietta Cavendish, née Holles (b. 1694, d. 1755) during her lifetime and thereafter to their daughter, Margaret Cavendish Bentinck (b. 1715, d.1785), duchess of Portland; the manuscripts were sold by the Countess and the Duchess in 1753 to the nation for £10,000 (a fraction of their contemporary value) under the Act of Parliament that also established the British Museum; the Harley manuscripts form one of the foundation collections of the British Library.
