Note book of Edward Barwicke, arms-painter. Heraldry, seal impressions, medical recipes, verse and other miscellaneous content. Volume has been started from both ends, and orientation varies.
f. 1: Impressions on wax of the arms of Chappel impaling Ashley, and the arms of Sanderson. Ibid.
ff. 1v-2: Recipes for dentifrice.
f. 2: A charm against enemies.
f. 4: Father Parson’s prayer.
f. 5: Verses attributed to the Earl of Castlehaven before his execution, 6 May 1631. Begins: ‘I neede no Trophies to adorne my hearse; My wife exalts my Hornes, in every vearse’.
ff. 7-9r: Names of the months in English, Greek, Latin, Hebrew, Arabic, Syriac, Aegiptic, Turkish, Ethiopian and Persian.
f. 9v: First ten cardinal numbers in the language of the island of Madagascar, according to Mr Herbert.

f. 41: Verses from a poem on the rebellion in the time of King Charles I. Extract begins ’Nor is this all where feigned devotion bends the highest things, to serve the lowest ends. For if the many-headed beast hath broke or shaken from his neck the Royall yoake, with popular rage Religion doth conspire, [etc.]’
f. 42: Against vomiting blood.
f. 44r: Imperfect draft of a hearse to stand in a church.
f. 44v: Impressions of wax of the seals of Fane, Thornhill, Bury, etc., with Bury’s quarterings in blazon.

The Harley Collection, formed by Robert Harley (1661-1724), 1st earl of Oxford and Mortimer, politician, and Edward Harley (1689-1741), 2nd earl of Oxford and Mortimer, book collector and patron of the arts.
Edward Harley bequeathed the library to his widow, Henrietta Cavendish, née Holles (1694-1755) during her lifetime and thereafter to their daughter, Margaret Cavendish Bentinck (1715-1785), duchess of Portland; the manuscripts were sold by the Countess and the Duchess in 1753 to the nation for £10,000 (a fraction of their contemporary value) under the Act of Parliament that also established the British Museum; the Harley manuscripts form one of the foundation collections of the British Library.
