- User Conditions:
- Physical Characteristics:
-
Materials: Paper.
Dimensions: 360 × 260 mm.
Foliation: ff. 38 (+ 1 unfoliated contemporary flyleaf at the beginning and end + 2 modern paper flyleaves at the beginning and end). Humfrey Wanley describes what seems to be the same manuscript as consisting of only six leaves (The Diary of Humfrey Wanley, 24 March 1724, ii, p. 349), and it is unclear whether the volume as it now exists was reunified at a later point.
Collation: The leaves have been damged by damp and are now mounted individually on paper guards.
Script: Gothic cursive.
Binding: British Museum/British Library in-house binding.
- Custodial History:
-
Origin: Darell family of Littlecote, Wiltshire.
Provenance:
Henry Worsley of St Edmund Hall (d. 1747): owned Harley MSS 1585–1747; this manuscript apparently acquired in a fragmentary state (The Diary of Humfrey Wanley, 24 March 1724, ii, p. 349).
The Harley Collection, formed by Robert Harley (b. 1661, d. 1724), 1st earl of Oxford and Mortimer, politician, and Edward Harley (b. 1689, d. 1741), 2nd earl of Oxford and Mortimer, book collector and patron of the arts.
Edward Harley bequeathed the library to his widow, Henrietta Cavendish, née Holles (b. 1694, d. 1755) during her lifetime and thereafter to their daughter, Margaret Cavendish Bentinck (b. 1715, d. 1785), duchess of Portland; the manuscripts were sold by the Countess and the Duchess in 1753 to the nation for £10,000 (a fraction of their contemporary value) under the Act of Parliament that also established the British Museum; the Harley manuscripts form one of the foundation collections of the British Library.
