Composite manuscript mostly of French historical tracts relating to the late seventeenth century.
Contents:
ff. 1-8: collection of over 200 medical recipes in Middle English, French, and Latin, 14th century. The English recipes probably translated from French or Anglo-Norman. Prologue inc. 'Here biginniþ gode medicinis þt gode leches habbeþ / founden and drawen out of grete bokis galiene / asclepius and ipocras for hm weren þe beste leches / in þe worlde', rubric 'Whoso haueþ ache oþer torment in his heued', inc. 'Make lye of verueine oþer of bitoyne ouþer of villes ouþer of Wermot / and wasche his heued', expl. 'slepe and hele hym wel'. Recipes for gout, genitals, aqua vita (ff. 4-5), charms and eyes are included.

ff. 105r-118v: remarks on the response to the letter of Monsieur Fagel, 27 February 1688.

Foliation: ff. 118 (+ 4 unfoliated paper flyleaves at the beginning and 4 at the end, and 4 blank leaves between ff. 16 and 17, 8 between ff. 33 and 34, and 2 between ff. 73 and 74).
Script: Gothic cursive (ff. 1r-8v) and round hand.
Binding: Post-1600. 'Harleian' binding of gold-tooled red leather; marbled endpapers.

Provenance:
The Harley Collection, formed by Robert Harley (b. 1661, d. 1724), 1st earl of Oxford and Mortimer, politician, and Edward Harley (b. 1689, d. 1741), 2nd earl of Oxford and Mortimer, book collector and patron of the arts.
Edward Harley bequeathed the library to his widow, Henrietta Cavendish, née Holles (b. 1694, d. 1755) during her lifetime and thereafter to their daughter, Margaret Cavendish Bentinck (b. 1715, d. 1785), duchess of Portland; the manuscripts were sold by the Countess and the Duchess in 1753 to the nation for £10,000 (a fraction of their contemporary value) under the Act of Parliament that also established the British Museum; the Harley manuscripts form one of the foundation collections of the British Library.
