ff. 1r-84r: Robert Mannyng [Robert Mannyng of Brunne] (d. in or after 1338), Handlyng Synne, a Middle English translation of the Anglo-Norman French Manuel des pechiez, attributed to William of Waddington (late 13th century) [see Boffey and Edwards, A New Index (2005), no. 778], entitled: 'Here bygynneþ the boke þat men clepyn yn frenshe Manuele pecche þe whych boke made yn frenshe Roberd Gros test Bysshop of lyncolne'; beginning: 'Fadyr and sone and holy goste / Þat art o god of myȝtes moste / At þy wurschyp shul we bygynn / To shame þe fende and shew oure synne'; ending with a colophon: 'Here endyþ Manuel pecche'.
ff. 84r-91v: Meditations on the Supper of Our Lord and the Hours of the Passion [Medytacyuns of the Soper of Oure Lorde Jhesu] sometimes attributed to Robert Mannyng. The text is a Middle English translation of the Meditationes vitae Christi (Pseudo-Bonaventure) [see Boffey and Edwards, A New Index (2005), no. 248]; entitled: 'Here bygynneþ medytacyuns of þe soper of oure lorde Jhesu. And also of hys passyun. And eke of þe peynes of hys swete modyr Mayden marye. þe whyche made yn latyn Bonauenture Cardynall'; beginning: 'Alle myȝty god yn trynyte / now and ever wyþ us be / ffor þy sones passyun / Save alle þys congregacyun'.
ff. 92r-95r: King Robert of Sicily (King Roberd of Cisyle) [see Boffey and Edwards, A New Index (2005), no. 2780]; beginning: '[P]rynces proude þat beþ yn pres / I wyl ȝow telle of þyng no les / In Cysylle was a noble kyng / ffayre and stronge and sumdele ȝyng'.
The manuscript contains a later addition:
f. 95v: A mass to be said against the plague, advocated by Pope Clement VI. See the mass published in Viard, 'La messe pour la peste' (1900), 334-38. Incipit (f. 95v): 'Dominus papa Clemens fecit et constituit [in] Collegio cum Cardinalibus et concessit omnibus audientibus Sequentem missam et dicentibus ducentos et sexaginta dies Indulgentie'. Imperfect: the text ends in midword at the bottom of the page, either never finished or continued on a subsequent folio (now lost); ending: 'detinebant eum ne disc[ederit] ab eis Quibus ille ait Quia & alijs civitatibus oportet me evangeliza'; added in the late 14th or early 15th century.
Decoration:
5 initials in gold with penwork decoration in purple (ff. 1r, 20v, 57r, 63r, 75r). Initials in blue with pen-flourished decoration in red. Rubrics, running titles, and marking of verse couplets in red. Some blue paraph marks on f. 85v. Initials highlighted in red. In ff. 92r-95r (Robert of Sicily, in the hand of another scribe), there is no use of red ink, and some space has been left for initials which have not been added. On f. 95v (the mass), some initials are highlighted in yellow.

Materials: Parchment.
Dimensions: 285 x 210 mm (text space: 220 x 165 mm, in 2 columns).
Foliation: ff. 95 (+ 6 unfoliated paper flyleaves and 1 unfoliated parchment flyleaf at the beginning + 4 unfoliated paper flyleaves at the end); each quire has been mounted onto a paper guard.
Collation: Gatherings of 8, with traces of quire signatures in the lower right corner of the rectos in the first half of gatherings.
Script: Gothic cursive (Anglicana); written by 3 scribes, scribe 1 (ff. 1r-91v), scribe 2 (ff. 92r-95r), and scribe 3 (ff. 95v).
Binding: British Library in-house, rebound in 1983.

The main scribe copied Mannyng's text around 1380 (Wright, English Vernacular Hands (1960), no. 13).
Henry Worsley (b. 1675, d. 1741), scholar and manuscript collector, envoy at the court of Portugal (1714-1721) and governor of Barbados (1721-1731): possibly his manuscript no. 39 (see Bernard, Catalogi Librorum Manuscriptorum (1697), p. 213); donated to Robert Harley before December 1712 together with other manuscripts from his collection, now Harley 1585-1747, 1811, 1812 (see Wright, Fontes Harleiani (1972), pp. 361-62).
The Harley Collection, formed by Robert Harley (b. 1661, d. 1724), 1st earl of Oxford and Mortimer, politician, and Edward Harley (b. 1689, d. 1741), 2nd earl of Oxford and Mortimer, book collector and patron of the arts.
Edward Harley bequeathed the library to his widow, Henrietta Cavendish, née Holles (b. 1694, d. 1755) during her lifetime and thereafter to their daughter, Margaret Cavendish Bentinck (b. 1715, d. 1785), duchess of Portland; the manuscripts were sold by the Countess and the Duchess in 1753 to the nation for £10,000 (a fraction of their contemporary value) under the Act of Parliament that also established the British Museum; the Harley manuscripts form one of the foundation collections of the British Library.
