ff. 4r-203v: Collection of Latin sermons, including excerpts from the Summa de vitiis et virtutibus of Denis the Carthusian (b. 1402, d. 1471), entitled: 'Sequitur aliqua excerpta dyonisii cartusiensis valde utilia: ex libello quodam qui intitulatur Illuminatorium salutaris sciencie . quem libellum composuit ad instanciam cuiusdam fratris minorum nepotis sui quemadmodum in fine prologi eiusdem attestatur' (f. 128r). The sermons are itemized in A Catalogue of the Harleian Manuscripts, II (1808), pp. 195-96.
The manuscript contains several additions:
ff. 1v-1*recto, 206r-206v: Leaves from a liturgical manuscript, including prayers to Christ, and a prayer for the living and the dead, beginning: 'Pietate tua quesumus domine nostrorum solve vincula omnium delictorum'; written in the (?) late 14th century.
ff. 2r-3v, 204r-205v: Notes on the sermons in a late 15th-century cursive hand.
Decoration:
1 large initial in blue (f. 4r). Numerous small initials in red and blue ink.

Materials: Paper; parchment (ff. 1, 1*, 206).
Dimensions: 220 x 70 mm (text space: 185 x 55 mm).
Foliation: ff. 1* + 206 (+ 2 unfoliated paper flyleaves at the beginning + 3 at the end); f. 1* follows f. 1, both leaves originally formed a single parchment leaf that was subsequently folded in half.
Collation: Indicated by leaf signatures; each leaf has been mounted separately onto a paper guard.
Script: Gothic cursive.
Binding: British Museum in house; gold-tooled brown half leather with the Harleian arms gold stamped on the outside covers; marbled endleaves.

Provenance:
Thomas Cowtes, 15th century: his ownership inscription on f. 1r: 'Ad usum ff[ratre] Thome Cowtes / vernes [sic: vermes] et tenebre flagellum frigus et ignis: demonis aspectus sceleris confusio luctus: Christus de penis Inferni' (see Wright, Fontes Harleiani (1972), p. 118).
Mr Noble, owned in the early 18th century: Humfrey Wanley, Keeper of the Harleian Library, added the following inscription in pencil to f. 1r: 'Bought of Mr Noble' (see Wright, Fontes Harleiani (1972), p. 253).
The Harley Collection, formed by Robert Harley (b. 1661, d. 1724 ), 1st earl of Oxford and Mortimer, politician, and Edward Harley (b. 1689, d. 1741), 2nd earl of Oxford and Mortimer, book collector and patron of the arts.
Edward Harley bequeathed the library to his widow, Henrietta Cavendish, née Holles (b. 1694, d. 1755) during her lifetime and thereafter to their daughter, Margaret Cavendish Bentinck (b. 1715, d.1785), duchess of Portland; the manuscripts were sold by the Countess and the Duchess in 1753 to the nation for £10,000 (a fraction of their contemporary value) under the Act of Parliament that also established the British Museum; the Harley manuscripts forms one of the foundation collections of the British Library.
