Title:

Decretals of Gregory IX, with gloss of Bernard of Parma

Scope & Content:

Decretals of Gregory IX compiled by Raymond of Peñafort, with the preface addressed to the university of Bologna, incipit: 'Gregorius episcopus servus servorum dei dilectis filius doctoribus et scolaribus universis bononie'; imperfect. A portion of the text is missing at the beginning of books 1 and 2 (after ff. 1 and 22). The gloss is by Bernard of Parma, incipit: 'In huius libri', with additions, some by English hands.

The reference system between the gloss and the text is that of letters of the alphabet.

Decoration:

Display script in blue with penwork decoration in red at the beginning of books 3, 4 and 5 (ff. 37r, 64v, 81r). Initials in blue or red with pen-flourishing in the other colour. Initials and paraphs in red or blue. Line-fillers in red ink.

Added drawings of faces in brown ink (see especially ff. 42r, 51v, 89r, 102v, 105v, etc.), including a man with a sword, accompanied by an inscription: 'omnes etas ab adolescentia et c.' (f. 102r).

John Riley, inscribed 'John Ryley de Northampton (?)' 16th century (f. 92v).

Samuel Knott (d. 1687), Rector of Combe Raleigh, Devon (1661-1668), antiquary and collector of manuscripts: inscribed with his name (f. 2v).

Robert Burscough (b. 1650/51, d.1709), Prebendary of Exeter in 1701, Archdeacon of Barnstaple in 1703, Rector of Cheriton Bishop in 1705: sold by his widow on 17 May 1715 to Robert Harley, along with other manuscripts (see Wright 1972; Diary 1966).

The Harley Collection, formed by Robert Harley (b. 1661, d. 1724), 1st Earl of Oxford and Mortimer, politician, and Edward Harley (b. 1689, d. 1741), 2nd Earl of Oxford and Mortimer, book collector and patron of the arts, inscribed as usual by their librarian, Humfrey Wanley ‘17 May 1715’ (f. [iii] recto).

Edward Harley bequeathed the library to his widow, Henrietta Cavendish, née Holles (b. 1694, d. 1755) during her lifetime and thereafter to their daughter, Margaret Cavendish Bentinck (b. 1715, d. 1785), Duchess of Portland; the manuscripts were sold by the Countess and the Duchess in 1753 to the nation for £10,000 (a fraction of their contemporary value) under the Act of Parliament that also established the British Museum; the Harley manuscripts form one of the foundation collections of the British Library.
