ff. 2-3: ‘Things of most note in this Booke. 1668’. Contents list by Randle Holme.
f. 4: Ownership inscription: ‘Randle Holme’.
ff. 5-10: ‘A Collection of the Maiors who have governed this Citie of Chester and the tyme when they governed’. Incomplete, consisting of a short account of the city and county, and its earls, with note by Randle Holme: ‘this was written by Mr Wm Higginson Sheriffe of Chester’.
ff. 11v-18: Latin notes by Randle Holme, headed ‘Notes out of Mr Bostocks manuscript made per Henrico Archidiacono ad Alexandrum Lincolniensem Ep[iscopu]m [1145], after contynued by Jo. Mathensi a monke of Delacrey [Dieulacres Abbey] to H 3 tyme’.

The Harley Collection, formed by Robert Harley (1661-1724), 1st earl of Oxford and Mortimer, politician, and Edward Harley (1689-1741), 2nd earl of Oxford and Mortimer, book collector and patron of the arts.
Edward Harley bequeathed the library to his widow, Henrietta Cavendish, née Holles (1694-1755) during her lifetime and thereafter to their daughter, Margaret Cavendish Bentinck (1715-1785), duchess of Portland; the manuscripts were sold by the Countess and the Duchess in 1753 to the nation for £10,000 under the Act of Parliament that also established the British Museum; the Harley manuscripts form one of the foundation collections of the British Library.
