f. 1: Part of title lettering from former binding: ‘Pedegrees’, formerly ‘Coates and Pedegrees’.
f. 2-3: Alphabetical list of names occurring in the roll of arms following, compiled by Randle Holme. Title on f. 2: ‘A Cathaloge of the names of the Cotes of this Roule Alphabetically 1634. Ran: Holme’.
ff. 4-13: Roll of English and Welsh coats of arms, especially for Herefordshire, now cut into folios and bound with the rest of the volume.
ff. 14-16: binders waste.
ff. 17-193: Large collection of pedigrees of English and Welsh families, partly extracted from Visitation-books, particularly those of Yorkshire and Staffordshire during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, with continuations. With loose papers of descents, church notes, and other papers, bound together or formerly fastened to the pedigrees. Entries in the hand of Richard Mundy, Jacob Chaloner and others.
Includes:
- Engraved descent of Prince Henry from the Houses of Lancaster and York (f. 22).
- Printed map (f. 132): Novo et vero dissegno della Marca di Ancona con li sui confini (Venice: Ferando Bertelli, 1565) (another copy in British Library Maps K.Top.80.46).
- Scattered original letters, including papers relating to Mrs Jane Shelley, heiress of L’Engaine (including ff. 67, 81, 143, 149, 178v).
- Copy of a confirmation of arms, and grant of crest to George Jenkes of Shropshire by Robert Cooke, Clarenceux, 1 May 1582 (f. 156). Includes a rough sketch of the Clarenceux in official garb).

Former owner: Holme family.
The Harley Collection, formed by Robert Harley (1661-1724), 1st earl of Oxford and Mortimer, politician, and Edward Harley (1689-1741), 2nd earl of Oxford and Mortimer, book collector and patron of the arts.
Edward Harley bequeathed the library to his widow, Henrietta Cavendish, née Holles (1694-1755) during her lifetime and thereafter to their daughter, Margaret Cavendish Bentinck (1715-1785), duchess of Portland; the manuscripts were sold by the Countess and the Duchess in 1753 to the nation for £10,000 under the Act of Parliament that also established the British Museum; the Harley manuscripts form one of the foundation collections of the British Library.
