Origin:
England; Wales (ff. 1r-4v, 159r-162v).
Provenance:
Edward Shawe of Halton, curate to John Brereton, Parson of Meonstoke in Hampshire, in the year 1576, and chaplain to Sir John Savage of Baraver in Hampshire, written largely by him: his name inscribed on f. 5r; and inscribed after poems added to the manuscript (not in Wright, Fontes Harleiani (1972)).
Archer Bostock, 16th or 17th century: inscribed his name on f. 158v: 'Archer Bostocke is my name' (not in Wright, Fontes Harleiani (1972)).
Holme family of Chester, arms painters and antiquaries: their shelfmark 'E.ii.0.3' inscribed on f. 1v; owned by Randle Holme I (b. c. 1571, d. 1655) or Randle Holme II (b. 1601, d. 1639), since the name 'Randle Holme' and the year 1632 are inscribed on f. 13v; acquired from them with their library by Robert Harley in 1710 (see Wright, Fontes Harleiani (1972), pp. 194-195).
The Harley Collection, formed by Robert Harley (b. 1661, d. 1724), 1st earl of Oxford and Mortimer, politician, and Edward Harley (b. 1689, d. 1741), 2nd earl of Oxford and Mortimer, book collector and patron of the arts.
Edward Harley bequeathed the library to his widow, Henrietta Cavendish, née Holles (b. 1694, d. 1755) during her lifetime and thereafter to their daughter, Margaret Cavendish Bentinck (b. 1715, d. 1785), duchess of Portland; the manuscripts were sold by the Countess and the Duchess in 1753 to the nation for £10,000 (a fraction of their contemporary value) under the Act of Parliament that also established the British Museum; the Harley manuscripts form one of the foundation collections of the British Library.
