- Title:
- Mrs. Babylon's Looking-glass: or, a Brief Description of the Doings in Satan's Synagogue, otherwise called the Church of England, who is mounted upon the Beasts, and agoing with Speed in the Wide Way of Destruction
- Scope & Content:
-
This manuscript was recorded missing in 1824.
The contents according to the printed Harley catalogue (1808) were as follows:
'A thin Book in 8vo. seeming to have been copied, incorrectly enough, by some Lawyers Clerk, toward the end of King Charles the seconds Reign. It is entituled,
"Mrs. Babylons Looking-glass : or a brief discription of the doings in Satans Sinagoge, otherwise called the Church of England, which is mounted upon the Beasts, and a-goeing with speed in the wide way of Destruction: and many clear truths laid togather worth your Observation. Written by a Servan of Christ, whose name is written in the Book of Life."
The name of this un-worthy Servant of Christ doth not appear ; but his silly performance shews him to have been a Quaker, and dwelling not far from Hitchin & Ecclesford : vid. fol. 38, 39, 43. &44. The Work, such as it is, is all in doggerel Rhymes, as scandalous as wicked. He endeavours to ridicule the holy Sacrament of Baptism. fol. 32. Episcopal Visitation. fol. 37. Confirmation. fol. 41. Both Universities. fol. 44. and our reverend Bishops & Clergy, almost every where. I could be more particular in describing these cscandalous Ballads, but I really think they do not deserve more Time or Pains.'
