Foliation: ff. 129 (+ 3 unfoliated paper flyleaves at the beginning + 2 at the end); 1 unfoliated paper pastedown on f. [i]recto (bibliographical notes); 1 loose unfoliated paper with a British Museum note about a missing leaf after f. 51 (now Sloane MS 297, f. 88); the upper part of f. 1 is torn away.
Collation: The manuscript is missing an opening quire (60 stanzas of the Life of Our Lady are missing), i?10-?4 (ff. 1-6), ii10-1 (ff. 7-15), iii12 (ff. 16-27), iv12 (ff. 28-39), v12 (ff. 40-51), vi12-1 (ff. 52-63, missing 1st leaf is now Sloane MS 297, f. 88), vii12 (ff. 64-74), viii12 (ff. 75-86), ix10 (ff. 87-96), x12 (ff. 97-108), xi12 (ff. 109-120), xii4 (ff. 121-124),xiii ?6-?1( ff. 125-29).

? John Welham: his name inscribed on f. 80v, added in the 15th century.
? 'ffnytham' or 'ffincham': inscription on f. 40r, added in the 15th century (see Manly and Rickert, The Text of the Canterbury Tales, I, p. 248).
'Wylliam hert': his name inscribed on f. 128r, added in the 15th century.
The Harley Collection, formed by Robert Harley (b. 1661, d. 1724), 1st earl of Oxford and Mortimer, politician, and Edward Harley (b. 1689, d. 1741), 2nd earl of Oxford and Mortimer, book collector and patron of the arts.
Edward Harley bequeathed the library to his widow, Henrietta Cavendish, née Holles (b. 1694, d. 1755) during her lifetime and thereafter to their daughter, Margaret Cavendish Bentinck (b. 1715, d. 1785), duchess of Portland; the manuscripts were sold by the Countess and the Duchess in 1753 to the nation for £10,000 (a fraction of their contemporary value) under the Act of Parliament that also established the British Museum; the Harley manuscripts form one of the foundation collections of the British Library.
