This manuscript contains the epic poem Thebais (Thebaid) by the Roman poet Publius Papinius Statius (b. 45, d. 96).
Contents:
ff. 2r-110r: Publius Papinius Statius, Thebais, with marginal and interlinear glosses, preceded by a verse of the 5th-century poet Coelius Sedulius (fl. 5th century): ‘pone supercilium si te cognoscis amicum’ and a rubric ‘Incipit liber primus Stacii Thebaidos’, beginning: ‘Fraternas acies alternaque regna’.
f. 110r: An anonymous epigram in six hexameter verses followed by an inscription in capital letters.

Decoration:
1 large initial in colours with acanthus leaves and zoomorphic motifs (f. 40v). Large initials in blue with red penwork decoration, or in green, or green and yellow with red penwork decoration. Large initials in red, some plain, some with simple decorative motifs. Small plain initials in green or red. Rubrics in red. Capitals marked in red.

Provenance:
Various unidentified medieval owners: their marginal and interlinear notes throughout in black and brown ink in a variety of hands from the 12th to the 15th centuries.
? 'Paulus', unidentified medieval owner: inscribed with his name ‘Paulus ego sum’ (f. 110v).
The Jesuit College in Agen (Lot-et-Garonne, France): inscribed with its ownership note in a 17th-century hand, 'Coll. Agen. Soc. Jesu. Cat. Insc.' (f. 2r).
The Harley Collection, formed by Robert Harley (b. 1661, d. 1724), 1st earl of Oxford and Mortimer, politician, and Edward Harley (b. 1689, d. 1741), 2nd earl of Oxford and Mortimer, book collector and patron of the arts.
Edward Harley bequeathed the library to his widow, Henrietta Cavendish, née Holles (b. 1694, d. 1755) during her lifetime and thereafter to their daughter, Margaret Cavendish Bentinck (b. 1715, d. 1785), duchess of Portland; the manuscripts were sold by the Countess and the Duchess in 1753 to the nation for £10,000 (a fraction of their contemporary value) under the Act of Parliament that also established the British Museum; the Harley manuscripts form one of the foundation collections of the British Library.
