Scope & Content:

This manuscript contains a selection of works by the Roman poet Quintus Horatius Flaccus (b. 65, d. 8 BC), also known as Horace. The Carmina feature extensive marginal and interlinear glossing. According to the manuscript's colophon (f. 106v), it was written by the scribe Angelus Ariminensem.

Contents:

f. 1r: an added inscription, 'Horatius Flaccus carminum';

ff. 1v-86v: Horace, Carmina;

ff. 87r-104r: Horace, Epodae;

ff. 104r-106v: Horace, Carmen saeculare.

Decoration:

4 large white vine initials in gold and colours with a few flowers (ff. 1v, 26r, 42r with a bird, 70v). Spaces for initials left blank.

Provenance:

Written by Angelus Ariminensem in Rome in 1443: colophon 'Codex iste scriptus est per me Angelum Ariminensem Romae mocccco quadragesimotertio secundo kalendas Octobr[is] 'filos' [in Greek script]' (f. 106v).

Nathaniel Noel (fl. 1681, d. c. 1753), bookseller, employed by Edward Harley for buying books and manuscripts chiefly on the Continent, where his agent was George Suttie (see Wright, Fontes Harleiani (1972), pp. 253-54): sold to Edward Harley on 18 January 1723/4 (f. 1r).

The Harley Collection, formed by Robert Harley (b. 1661, d. 1724), 1st earl of Oxford and Mortimer, politician, and Edward Harley (b. 1689, d. 1741), 2nd earl of Oxford and Mortimer, book collector and patron of the arts, inscribed as usual by their librarian, Humfrey Wanley ‘18 die Januarij, A.D. 1723/4’ (f. 1r). Edward Harley bequeathed the library to his widow, Henrietta Cavendish, née Holles (b. 1694, d. 1755) during her lifetime and thereafter to their daughter, Margaret Cavendish Bentinck (b. 1715, d. 1785), duchess of Portland; the manuscripts were sold by the Countess and the Duchess in 1753 to the nation for £10,000 (a fraction of their contemporary value) under the Act of Parliament that also established the British Museum; the Harley manuscripts form one of the foundation collections of the British Library.
