Contents:
ff. 1r-225r: Missal with a calendar (ff. 1r-6v), the latter imperfect (begins with March); and music notation (neumes on 3-line staves). The Canon of the Mass (ff. 145r-151v) has been written in a much larger script.
The manuscript contains a few later additions:
f. 225r: A poem describing the manuscript’s ownership by the abbey of Maria Laach; added in 1558.
f. 225r: A liturgical song, entitled ‘Sequentia de Domina’, and beginning: ‘Verbum bonum et suave personemus illud ave per quod Christi fit conclave’; added in the 16th century.
Decoration:
Full scatter border with a very large historiated initial 'A' in colours and gold (f. 8r), featuring a miniature that juxtaposes the law received by Moses and the Grace of Christ. 1 very large historiated initial 'T' in colours and gold (f. 145r), featuring a miniature that juxtaposes Abraham's sacrifice of Isaac and the Israelites collecting manna, and with a consecration cross in gold in a roundel with a blue ground and a gold border in the lower margin. 8 large historiated initials in colours and gold, featuring miniatures of the resurrected Christ before Mary (f. 90v), a monstrance (f. 112v), the Annunciation (f. 207r), St Peter (f. 216v), St Lawrence (f. 225r), the Assumption of the Virgin Mary (f. 226r), the Virgin Mary with Christ child [Madonna] on a crescent moon (f. 230r), the Virgin Mary holding the Christ child with a fruit (f. 245r). Large initials in colours and gold with floral and/or acanthus motifs, some with partial borders (e.g., f. 17r), and one (f. 73r) featuring a skull with a banderole inscribed with the text ‘memento mori’. Large initials in gold on coloured grounds. Smaller initials in colours with acanthus motifs. Initials in blue or green with red pen-flourishing, and in red with purple pen-flourishing, some large, some small. 'KL' initials in colours. Initials vary in style and may have been painted in different campaigns. Rubrics in red. Capitals marked in red.

Provenance:
Partially written by Johann Augustinus Machhausen, Prior of the Benedictine abbey of Maria Laach, in 1541: according to an inscription on f. 255r [see below] (see Die Benediktinerabtei Laach, ed. by Resmini (1993), p. 78 (no. 63)).
Ludwig Backhuys of Kobern, near Coblenz: a 16th-century inscription on f. 1r records his gift of the manuscript (or part of it) to the Benedictine abbey of Maria Laach, diocese of Trier, Germany: inscribed, 'Liber gloriose virginis Marie in Lacu: quem contulit monasterio nostro honorabilis sacerdos Lodovicus Backhuys de Coverna ad petitionem germani sui f[rater] Joannis monachi Lacensis: pro quo memor sit eius misericors deus' (see Wright, Fontes Harleiani (1972), p. 58).
The Benedictine abbey of Maria Laach, diocese of Trier, Germany: according to the donor inscription on f. 1r (see above) and an inscription on f. 255r: 'Lectorem moneo si forte voluminis huius / Scriptorem adsciscat, Leonardis nomine constat / Bochout ipse satus, sed frater deinde lacensis. / Conscripsit Marie, patribusque precantibus, Anno sesquimilleno octenis lustrisque peractis. / De Remagen Petrus dum prestantissimus Abbas / Presidet, exemplar virtutis, honos specimenque / Eternas tibi nate dei hinc grates resonamus / Quo labor evadat prestantior, ethereasque; / Mens eat ad arces, pictor sua premia tollat / Qui Augustinus erat machius prior ipse Lacensis' (see Wright, Fontes Harleiani (1972), p. 213). Petrus Maech von Remagen was abbot of Maria Laach from 1530 to 1552. Johannes Augustinus Machusius was Prior before becoming abbot from 1552 to 1568.
George Suttie, foreign agent of the book collector Nathaniel Noel, who travelled on the continent to visit monastic and other libraries, bookseller: purchased the manuscript in 1717 (not listed under his entry in Wright, Fontes Harleiani (1972), p. 322; but see Die Benediktinerabtei Laach, ed. by Resmini (1993), p. 78 (no. 63)).
The Harley Collection, formed by Robert Harley (b. 1661, d. 1724), 1st earl of Oxford and Mortimer, politician, and Edward Harley (b. 1689, d. 1741), 2nd earl of Oxford and Mortimer, book collector and patron of the arts.
Edward Harley bequeathed the library to his widow, Henrietta Cavendish, née Holles (b. 1694, d. 1755) during her lifetime and thereafter to their daughter, Margaret Cavendish Bentinck (b. 1715, d. 1785), duchess of Portland; the manuscripts were sold by the Countess and the Duchess in 1753 to the nation for £10,000 (a fraction of their contemporary value) under the Act of Parliament that also established the British Museum; the Harley manuscripts form one of the foundation collections of the British Library.
