11 full-page miniatures with full foliate borders on inserted single leaves, attributed to Pieter Danielszoon (d. 1471), priest of the Bridgettine monastery of Mariënwater (see Olsen, 'Handschriften' (1995), p. 226, n. 2, citing Gerlach, 'Spiegel' (1981)): Matins, the Annunciation (f. 23v); Laudes, the Visitation (f. 31v); Terce, the Annunciation to the Shepherds (f. 42v); Sext, the Presentation in the Temple (f. 45v); None, the Adoration of the Magi (f. 48v); Vespers, the Massacre of the Innocents, effaced (f. 51v); Compline, the Flight into Egypt (f. 56v); Pentecost (f. 65v); the Crucifixion (f. 69v); King David enthroned with a book (f. 73v); a funeral service (f. 84v).
The miniatures for Sext and None in the Hours of the Virgin are probably misbound.
2 miniatures probably excised after ff. 10 (Gospel Lessons) and 38 (Prime in the Hours of the Virgin). Stubs of excised leaves visible after ff. 38 and 59.

Small initials (1 line) in gold with blue pen-flourishing or in blue with red pen-flourishing. Line-fillers decorated in red, blue and/or gold. Capital letters highlighted in red.

Foliation: 105 (+ 1 paper flyleaf at the beginning and 5 unfoliated medieval parchment [the last pasted to a paper leaf] and 1 paper flyleaves at the end).
ff. 1-3 are medieval parchment flyleaves. f. 1 is pasted to a paper leaf.
Script: Gothic.
Binding: Post-1600. Diced brown calf; gilt edges.
Impressions and sewing holes from pilgrim badges on ff. 2-3, 105-[106].

Eastern France, perhaps Saint-Claude, Jura; Southern Netherlands or Netherlands (miniatures only).
Provenance:
The area of Saint-Claude, Jura: added suffrages to St Claude, St Eugendus of Condat and St Romanus of Condat, late 15th century (f. 103r-v).
Numerous additions in French and Latin, 15th-16th centuries (see Scope and Contents).
Inscription in the upper margin (f. 5r).
Catherine Boutechoux (d. 1572), wife of Humbert Jantet, Doctor of Law and Judge 'de la Régalie' of Besançon: inscribed 'Ces heures sont a dame Catherine Boutechoux femme de messire Humbert Jantet docteure en drois Juge de la Regalie de Besancon et luy sereont donnes par discette(?) personne messire Jehan Jantet par son cousin' (f. 1v).
An inscribed name, crossed out, perhaps 'Jeurmont' or 'Jeunnont', 16th-17th century (f. 2r).
The Harley Collection, formed by Robert Harley (b. 1661, d. 1724), 1st earl of Oxford and Mortimer, politician, and Edward Harley (b. 1689, d. 1741), 2nd earl of Oxford and Mortimer, book collector and patron of the arts, inscribed as usual by their librarian, Humfrey Wanley '1 die Aprilis, A.D. 1725.' (f. 2r).
Edward Harley bequeathed the library to his widow, Henrietta Cavendish, née Holles (b. 1694, d. 1755) during her lifetime and thereafter to their daughter, Margaret Cavendish Bentinck (b. 1715, d. 1785), duchess of Portland; the manuscripts were sold by the Countess and the Duchess in 1753 to the nation for £10,000 (a fraction of their contemporary value) under the Act of Parliament that also established the British Museum; the Harley manuscripts form one of the foundation collections of the British Library.
