This 12th-century English manuscript contains a collection of sermons, and theological writings by and spuriously attributed to the Church Father St Augustine of Hippo (b. 354, d. 430), and his disciple Prosper of Aquitaine (b. c. 390, c. 455). The manuscript was owned and perhaps also produced at the Benedictine abbey of Bury St Edmunds; it is recorded in a catalogue of the abbey's library that was probably written in the 3rd quarter of the 12th century.

Decoration:
Numerous large and small initials in red, occasionally with reserved designs and some penwork decoration in red or plummet. Display script in brown ink for letters following large initials. One running header with some penwork decoration (f. 98v). Rubrics in red. Rough drawing of a human figure in plummet (f. 42r, lower margin). Underdrawings in plummet are visible for a number of initials (e.g. ff. 103v, 165v, and 166v); occasionally the design differs (e.g. f. 192v). Manicules added in brown ink. A marginal drawing of a triangle in black ink on f. 200v.

Leaves missing before f. 1 and after f. 207. Signatures in the centre of the lower margin of the verso of the last leaf of the quires; catchwords.
Script: Protogothic.
Binding: Post-1600. British Museum/British Library in-house. Rebound on 10 November 1966: red half leather binding with Harley’s bookplate gold-stamped on the upper and lower covers, the spine inscribed in gold: ‘S. AUGUSTINE. SERMONS. ETC.’; the old binding (gold-tooled and blind-stamped dark brown sprinkled leather) pasted on the inside covers.

Provenance:
The Benedictine Abbey of Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk: recorded in a list of books from the library of Bury St Edmunds (Cambridge, Pembroke College, MS 47, f. 117v); the respective section of the list was probably written in the 3rd quarter of the 12th century (see Sharpe, English Benedictine Libraries (1996), pp. 50-52 and pp. 60-61 [B13.50]).
?‘John Lynsey’, owned in the 15th or 16th century: his name inscribed on f. 86v.
The Harley Collection, formed by Robert Harley (b. 1661, d. 1724), 1st earl of Oxford and Mortimer, politician, and Edward Harley (b. 1689, d. 1741), 2nd earl of Oxford and Mortimer, book collector and patron of the arts: the Harley family seat Brampton Bryan (see Wright and Wright, Diary (1966), I, pp. xlii-xliii) and then brought to London after Robert's death in 1724, received in the library on 16 October 1725, inscribed by the librarian Humfrey Wanley 'Hunc Codicem e Bramptenia [...] 1725' (f. 1r).
Edward Harley bequeathed the library to his widow, Henrietta Cavendish, née Holles (b. 1694, d. 1755) during her lifetime and thereafter to their daughter, Margaret Cavendish Bentinck (b. 1715, d.1785), duchess of Portland; the manuscripts were sold by the Countess and the Duchess in 1753 to the nation for £10,000 (a fraction of their contemporary value) under the Act of Parliament that also established the British Museum; the Harley manuscripts form one of the foundation collections of the British Library.
