Origin:
Southern Netherlands (Grimbergen).
Provenance:
The Premonstratensian abbey of Grimbergen, near Vilvoorde, in Flemish Brabant, Belgium, founded in 1128, dissolved in 1796 and reinstated after the French Revolution, owned from the 12th century until about 1560: one ownership inscription is written in a display script which is also used in the main text of this manuscript on f. 71r: 'Liber Sanctorum apostolorum petri et Pauli in Glinberge'; two further ownership inscriptions in 12th- or 13th- century hands on ff. 1v and 93v (see Wright, Fontes Harleiani (1972), p. 172).
Nicolaus de Spira (d. 1568), abbot of the Premonstratensian abbey of Grimbergen, in (?) 1560: donated the manuscript to Johannes Vlimmerius (d. 1597), prior of the Augustinian priory of Sint-Maartensdal [Val St. Martin], Leuven, according to inscriptions on ff. 2r, 2v (see Wright, Fontes Harleiani (1972), p. 312).
The Harley Collection, formed by Robert Harley (b. 1661, d. 1724), 1st earl of Oxford and Mortimer, politician, and Edward Harley (b. 1689, d. 1741), 2nd earl of Oxford and Mortimer, book collector and patron of the arts, inscribed as usual by their librarian, Humfrey Wanley ‘11 die Martij, A.D. 1723/4’ (f. 1r).
Edward Harley bequeathed the library to his widow, Henrietta Cavendish, née Holles (b. 1694, d. 1755) during her lifetime and thereafter to their daughter, Margaret Cavendish Bentinck (b. 1715, d.1785), duchess of Portland; the manuscripts were sold by the Countess and the Duchess in 1753 to the nation for £10,000 (a fraction of their contemporary value) under the Act of Parliament that also established the British Museum; the Harley manuscripts form one of the foundation collections of the British Library.
