A deluxe copy of the treatise of Claudius Ptolomaeus On Music in Latin from the library of the Franchino Gaufurio a Renaissance theorist of music and harmony.

f.1v-2r: Table of chapters, with the inscription: 'Franchini Gafurii Laudensis musice professoris hic liber est (written in the same hand as the rest of the manuscript).

. 2v: Preface of the translator Niccolo Leoniceno to Pietro Barozzi bishop of Padua, begins 'Translationem musices Ptolomei...', dated Ferrara Kl. Martii 1499, printed in P. O. Kristeller, Catalogus translationum et commentariorum, 8 vols (Washington D. C.: Catholic University of America Press, 1960-2003), III (1976), pp. 70-71.

f. 3r-46v: Claudius Ptolomaeus, Harmony (books 1-3), begins 'Harmonica est facultas differentiarum....'; ends '...Reliquum autem ut singula p(er)suasibiliter obseruata per ea qu(a)e fiunt consideremus.; and the colophon 'Claudii Ptolomei Harmonicon interprete Nicolao Leoniceno ... adhortatione et opera... Petri Barotii episcopi Patavini ac Franchini Gafuri musicam profitentis explicit foeliciter (in red). Finis 1499 die sabati tertio augusti hora vicesima prima in Sancto Marcelino in civitate Mediolani propria manu Franchini Gafurii musice professoris qui die Mercurii 26° Junii proxime preteriti (?) primam huic transcriptioni manum imposuit.

Decoration:

1 large historiated initial in colours and gold with a portrait of Ptolemy (f. 3r). Arms of Franchinus Gaufurio [di Savigliano] of Lodi in colours and gold (f. 3r). 3 large initials in gold on coloured grounds with foliate extensions (ff. 2v, 18v, 35r). Smaller initials in blue with red penwork decoration and in red with purple penwork decoration. Numerous diagrams illustrating musical principles, sometimes several per page (ff. 3r, 6v, 7r, 7v, 9r, 9v, 10v, 12r, 12v, 13v, 14r, 15r, 16r, 16v, 17r, 18r, 18v, 19r, 19v, 20r, 20v, 21r, 21v, 22r, 23r, 23v, 24v, 27r, 27v, 29r, 30r, 30v, 31v, 32r, 32v, 33r, 33v, 34v, 37r, 37v, 38v, 44r). Franchinus Gaufurio di Savigliano of Lodi (b. 1451, d. 1522), Italian musical theorist: inscribed, 'Franchini Gafurii laudensis [Lodi] musice professoris hic liber est' (f. 2r); his arms (f. 3r); 'Claudij Ptolomei Harmonicon Interprete Nicolao Leoniceno Artium et Medicine ferarie professore ad hortatione et opera celeberrimi viri petri Barotij Patavini [Padua] ac franchini Gafuri musicam profitentis: explicit foeliciter (f. 46v); and 'Finis 1499 die sabati tertio augusti hora vigessima prima in sancto marcelino in civitate mediolani [Milan] propria manu Franchini gafurij musice professsoris qui die mercurij 26o Junij proxime parti primam huic transcriptioni manum imposuerat' (f. 46v).

John Gibson (fl. 1720-1726), dealer; sold to Edward Harley on 7 June 1721 (see Wright, Diary (1966); Wright, Fontes Harleiani (1972)).

The Harley Collection, formed by Robert Harley (b. 1661, d. 1724), 1st earl of Oxford and Mortimer, politician, and Edward Harley (b. 1689, d. 1741), 2nd earl of Oxford and Mortimer, book collector and patron of the arts, inscribed as usual by their librarian, Humfrey Wanley ‘7 die Junij, A.D. 1721’ (f. 1r).

Edward Harley bequeathed the library to his widow, Henrietta Cavendish, née Holles (b. 1694, d. 1755) during her lifetime and thereafter to their daughter, Margaret Cavendish Bentinck (b. 1715, d. 1785), duchess of Portland; the manuscripts were sold by the Countess and the Duchess in 1753 to the nation for £10,000 (a fraction of their contemporary value) under the Act of Parliament that also established the British Museum; the Harley manuscripts form one of the foundation collections of the British Library.
