- Meditationes ad quendam monacum anachoritam; Speculum sacerdotum; Speculum peccatoris; Speculum conversacionis honestae; Doctrina laicorum; Decem signa divini amoris et de malis sacerdotis; legal formularies
- Scope & Content:
-
This composite manuscript contains theological and legal works in Latin and English that were copied in the 15th and early 16th centuries.
The manuscript can be divided into eight parts (Part 1 is ff. 2r-18r; Part 2 is ff. 19r-47v; Part 3 is ff. 48r-58v; Part 4 is ff. 59r-66v; Part 5 is ff. 67r-87v; Part 6 is ff. 88r-93v; Part 7 is ff. 94r-103v; Part 8 is ff. 104r-115r), but the script in Parts 1, 3, 4, 5 and 6 ff. 88r-91r, suggests that these sections were copied by the same scribe in the 15th century. This scribe may be the 'Jon Benet' who signs his name at the end of the Speculum peccatoris on f. 64r. Since his hand does not match with that of the priest and chronicler John Benet (d. 1474), vicar of Harlington, Bedfordshire (1443-1471), and rector of Broughton, Hungtindonshire (1471-1474), who compiled a commonplace book, now Dublin, Trinity College, MS 516, between c. 1461 and c. 1471, this scribe remains unidentified [for Dublin, Trinity College, MS 516, see Scattergood, Manuscripts and Ghosts (2006), p. 47]. Parts 2 and 7 were also written in the 15th century, while Part 8 may date to the early 16th century. The same (?) two hands have added legal formularies that date from around the year 1540 to Parts 6 and 8, suggesting that these different parts were kept or bound together at an early point in time.

- Custodial History:
-
Origin:
England.
Provenance:
? John Benet [perhaps John Benet (d. 1474), vicar of Harlington, Bedfordshire (1443-1471), and rector of Broughton, Hungtindonshire (1471-1474)], 15th century: may have copied Parts 1, 3, 4, 5 and 6 ff. 88r-91r (not in Wright, Fontes Harleiani (1972)).
? William Harewood [Harewode], late 15th or early 16th century: his inscription on f. 1r: 'Qui scripsit scripta, sua dextera sit benedicta - Wylliam Harewode' (not in Wright, Fontes Harleiani (1972)).
Samuel Knott (d. 1687), rector of Combe Raleigh, Devon (1661-1668), antiquary and collector of manuscripts: titles of works are inscribed in red ink in his hand on ff. 2r, 17r, 19r, 46r, 58v, 65v, 66r, 88r; and his marginal annotations feature on e.g. ff. 50r, 51v, 87v, 89r, 91r (see Wright, Fontes Harleiani (1972), p. 211); a note at the bottom of f. 93v suggests that Knott changed the manuscript's contents: 'Semovi visionem Canonici de Bridlington metricem' ['I have removed the metrical vision of the Canon of Bridlington']; referring to the 'Prophecy of John Bridlington', a Latin poem attributed to St John Twenge [Thwing], Augustinian canon regular at the Priory of St Mary at Bridlington in the East Riding of Yorkshire. This item may be identifiable with the Prophecy of John of Bridlington in Harley Ms 2270, ff. 195r-198r. Although the paper is much larger in size of Harley MS 3363, and clearly written by a different scribe, this copy was also owned and annotated by Knott.
Robert Burscough (b. 1650/51, d. 1709), prebendary of Exeter in 1701, archdeacon of Barnstaple in 1703, rector of Cheriton Bishop in 1705: sold by his widow on 17 May 1715 to Robert Harley, along with other manuscripts (see Diary, ed. by Wright and Wright (1966) I, p. 11 n. 6; Wright, Fontes Harleiani (1972), pp. 87-88).
The Harley Collection, formed by Robert Harley (b. 1661, d. 1724), 1st earl of Oxford and Mortimer, politician, and Edward Harley (b. 1689, d. 1741), 2nd earl of Oxford and Mortimer, book collector and patron of the arts, inscribed as usual by their librarian, Humfrey Wanley ‘17 Maij, A.D. 1715’ (f. 1r).
Edward Harley bequeathed the library to his widow, Henrietta Cavendish, née Holles (b. 1694, d. 1755) during her lifetime and thereafter to their daughter, Margaret Cavendish Bentinck (b. 1715, d. 1785), duchess of Portland; the manuscripts were sold by the Countess and the Duchess in 1753 to the nation for £10,000 (a fraction of their contemporary value) under the Act of Parliament that also established the British Museum; the Harley manuscripts form one of the foundation collections of the British Library.
