This atlas consists of a collection of sea charts, executed by the Italian cartographer and cosmographer Joan Martines (d. 1591) in 1578. The atlas's 17 charts are laid down on a plane scale and span each verso and its opposing recto.
A similar collection of charts by Martines, also executed in 1578, is now Harley MS 3489.
Contents:
ff. 1v-2r: A map of the world, on a planisphere;
ff. 2v-3r: A map of the two hemispheres. Inscribed, 'Joan Martines en Messina añy 1618'. The two middle figures have been altered, probably from 1578;
ff. 3v-4r. A map of the world spherically projected, on twelve gores, for applying to a solid globe;
ff. 4v-5r: A map of China, with part of southern Japan;
ff. 5v-6r: A map of the Sea of China and the Eastern Archipelago, with part of the north coast of New Holland, here called 'Meridionale, discoperta novamente';
ff. 6v-7r: A map of the coast of Asia, from Ormus on the west to Cochin China on the east, with Sumatra, Java, and part of Borneo;
ff. 7v-8r: A map of the Mediterranean eastward of the Morea, the Red Sea, and the Persian Gulf, with the eastern coast of Africa;
ff. 8v-9r: A map of Africa, south of the equator, with part of the Indian Ocean;
ff. 9v-10r: A map of the western coast of Africa;
ff. 10v-11r: A map of the western coast of Mexico and North America, Japan, and part of the coast of Asia;
ff. 11v-12r: A map of the coasts of Mexico, the Isthmus of Panama, and the western coast of South America;
ff. 12v-13r: A map of South America, with the Straits of Magellan, and the Terra del Fuego;
ff. 13v-14r: A map of the north-east coast of South America;
ff. 14v-15r: A map of the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea, with the eastern coast of America;
ff. 15v-16r: A map of the western coast of Europe and Africa, with part of the eastern coast of North America;
ff. 16v-17r: A map of the western coast of Europe, and Africa, with the Mediterranean westward of Corfu;
ff. 17v-18r: A map of the Black Sea and the Archipelago, with the Mediterranean eastward of Sicily;
ff. 18v-19r: A map of the eastern coast of the Black Sea and the Mediterranean, with the Caspian Sea ('Mare de Bachu'), the northern part of the Persian Gulf, and part of Asia.

Provenance:
Joan Martines (d. 1591), cartographer: inscribed 'Joan Martines en Messina añy 1618'.
Pierre Séguier (b. 1588, d. 1672), chancellor: acquired from him for the Harley library through Andrew Hay.
The Harley Collection, formed by Robert Harley (b. 1661, d. 1724 ), 1st earl of Oxford and Mortimer, politician, and Edward Harley (b. 1689, d. 1741), 2nd earl of Oxford and Mortimer, book collector and patron of the arts. Edward Harley bequeathed the library to his widow, Henrietta Cavendish, née Holles (b. 1694, d. 1755) during her lifetime and thereafter to their daughter, Margaret Cavendish Bentinck (b. 1715, d.1785), duchess of Portland; the manuscripts were sold by the Countess and the Duchess in 1753 to the nation for £10,000 (a fraction of their contemporary value) under the Act of Parliament that also established the British Museum; the Harley manuscripts forms one of the foundation collections of the British Library.
