Collection of Alchemical and Medical Treatises and Recipes; 15th cent. Latin and Middle English. Copies. Imperfect in parts. A composite and miscellaneous volume, its first part (ff. 1-94v; items 1-19) relates mainly to alchemy and includes: - a) Mirror of lights (ff. 1-14, imperfect; item 1); - b) Johannes Pauper, Breviloquium (ff. 57v-59v; item 11); - c) John Dastin, Libellus aureus (ff. 60v-64v; item 13); - d) John Sawtry, Radix mundi (ff. 68v-80v; item 15). The second part of the volume (ff. 95-118v) contains texts relating mainly to medicine that include: - e) Walter Agilon, Treatise on pulses (ff. 95v-97v; item 21); - f) De ornato mulierum from the Trotula ensemble (ff. 97v-100v; item 22); - g) Ralph Hoby, Treatise relating to medicine and astronomy (ff. 103-110; item 24); - h) Two treatises relating to uroscopy and phlebotomy (ff. 110v-111v, item 25; ff. 111v-112, item 27); - i) A drawing of a bloodletting man with explanatory text (f. 112v; item 29); - j) Roger de Baron, Rogerina minor (ff. 113-115v, 116v; item 30); - k) Roger of Parma, Summa parva, Excerpts? (ff. 115v-116v; item 31). The volume also includes a text on fencing divided into three parts and relating to the use of two-handed or great-swords (ff. 82-85; item 18). Owned in 16th cent. by Thomas Byard, vicar of Bockerell (?), unidentified, his ownership notes (ff. 67v, 87) and verse in Latin (f. 102v, inc. 'Vite presentis in consuetudinem'). Owned in 17th cent. by Samuel Knott (d. 1687), Rector of Combe Raleigh and priest of Broad Hembury, co. Devon, and bearing notes by him (passim), one of which (f. 68) signed 'S. Kanutus'. Owned by Robert Burscough (1650/51-1709), prebendary of Exeter in 1701, archdeacon of Barnstaple in 1703, rector of Cheriton Bishop in 1705; for Burscough, see Oxford Dictionary of National Biography. Acquired with other MSS. by Robert Harley (1661-1724), 1st earl of Oxford and Mortimer, politician, from Burscough's widow on 17 May 1715, the date noted by Harley's librarian, Humfrey Wanley (1672-1726) on f. 1: for the negotiation preceding the purchase see C. E. Wright and R. C. Wright, The Diary of Humfrey Wanley (London, 1966), i, p. 11 n. 6, and ii, p. 490. For the provenance see also C. E. Wright, Fontes Harleiani (London, 1972), pp. 88, 211, 430. Passed on to Robert Harley's son, Edward (1689-1741), 2nd earl of Oxford and Mortimer, book collector and patron of the arts. Bequeathed with his library to his widow, countess Henrietta, née Cavendish Holles (1694-1755), during her lifetime and thereafter to their daughter, Margaret Cavendish Bentinck (1715-1785), duchess of Portland. Sold with the other Harley manuscripts by the countess and the duchess in 1753 to the nation for £10,000 (a fraction of their contemporary value) under the Act of Parliament that also established the British Museum. The Harleian manuscripts became part of the collections of the British Library on its establishment in 1973. Composite MS. comprising three booklets of different origin (ff. 1-16, 17-94, 95-118). Gatherings: i20-5 (xv-xvi, xviii-xx missing), one single added leaf (f. 16), ii12-2 (i and xii missing), iii-v12, vi10, vii12, viii12-2 (missing two leaves, possibly xi-xii), ix-x12; gatherings ii-viii with traces of leaf signatures in the lower right corner of rectos in the first half of gatherings; gatherings iv-vi with horizontal catchwords framed by cartouches at lower right margin corner of last versos. Second unit, ff. 17-94 (gatherings ii-viii), imperfect at the beginning and at the end: ruled in brown ink (only bounding lines) for single columns of 28-31 lines (first across top ruled line), written space circa 165 x 110 (ff. 17-44) and 143 x 88 (ff. 44v-94v), written possibly by two scribes in an English bookhand (cursiva antiquior libraria/formata - Anglicana), initials (2-4 lines, 15 lines in the margin on f. 68) in red and black or (ff. 88v-90) in green, occasionally (ff. 28v, 44v, 68v, 69) with pen work decoration in black and red, titles in formal Gothic hand (littera textualis formata - textus rotundus, ff. 25v, 44v, 55v), rubrics and paragraph marks in red, occasional cadels on first line (ff. 44v-94v), marginal diagram (f. 57v), blank space left for initials and rubrics added in red by S. 1. ff. 1-14. Mirror of lights, in verse; 15th cent. Middle English. Copy. Imperfect at the beginning. The text is an anonymous revised Middle English version of a Latin text entitled Semita recta (see item 4, ff. 17-25v), often spuriously attributed to Albertus Magnus. 3. ff. 16-16v. Modus Maurandi, three alchemical recipes; 15th cent. Middle English. Copies. Possibly imperfect. Title 'Modus Maurandi', inc. 'Then it be rubbed where it is gylt wt softe souder & water / and with a softe lynen'. Notes in the upper margin indicate that the text corresponds to a Latin text on ff. 44v and 65r. Listed in eVK2 at no. 7111.50.

22. ff. 97v-100v. De ornatu mulierum; 15th cent. Latin. Copy. The third of the texts on women's medicine forming the so-called Trotula ensemble, generally believed to have originated from the School of Salerno in the 12th century. This treatise is dedicated to cosmetic treatments. Title 'Incipit tractatus utilissimus de ornatu mulieris corporis / et faciei cutis et capillorum et membrorum ceterorum', inc. 'Ut ait Ypocras in libro quem de scientia pronosticorum edidit', expl. 'talem emplastrum durat per duos annos'. The text corresponds to the third redaction of the work (DOM3), found only in French and English MSS: see M. H.
