ff. 1r-26r: Alphabetical index of family names.
ff. 27r-228v: Account of the families in Messina; according to Catalogue of the Harleian Manuscripts (1808), III, p. 43, the manuscript is entitled: 'Il Libro Famiglie degli de Messine'. This title was probably legible on the manuscript's previous binding. The modern British Museum binding has 'Famiglie di Messina' inscribed in gold letters on its spine.

Dimensions: 290 x 200 mm (text space: 250 x 100 mm).
Foliation: ff. 1* + 228 (+ 3 unfoliated paper flyleaves at the beginning + 4 at the end); f. 1* is a paper leaf; 1 unfoliated blank paper leaf after ff. 24, 36, 217, and 223; and 2 unfoliated blank paper leaves after f. 26. Paper tabs have been cut out from the outer margins of ff. 1r-26r, and inscribed with the letters 'A' to 'Y' (creating an alphabetical index).
Collation: Each quire has been mounted separately onto a paper guard.
Script: Italian script.
Binding: British Museum in-house; brown half leather with the Harleian arms gold stamped on the outside covers; rebound on 20 September 1966.

Provenance:
Don Tomas Caffaro, owned in the 17th century: his name inscribed on f. 1*recto: 'Don Tomas Caffaro' (see Wright, Fontes Harleiani (1972), p. 92).
Pierre Séguier (b. 1588, d. 1672), chancellor of France from 1635 (see Wright, Fontes Harleiani (1972), p. 300).
Andrew Hay (d. 1754?), book dealer: sold together with other manuscripts from the Séguier collection on 5 September 1720 (see Diary, ed. by Wright and Wright (1966), I, p. 68 n. 1; and Wright, Fontes Harleiani (1972), p. 183).
The Harley Collection, formed by Robert Harley (b. 1661, d. 1724), 1st earl of Oxford and Mortimer, politician, and Edward Harley (b. 1689, d. 1741), 2nd earl of Oxford and Mortimer, book collector and patron of the arts, inscribed as usual by their librarian, Humfrey Wanley ‘5 Septembris, 1720’ (f. 1*recto).
Edward Harley bequeathed the library to his widow, Henrietta Cavendish, née Holles (b. 1694, d. 1755) during her lifetime and thereafter to their daughter, Margaret Cavendish Bentinck (b. 1715, d. 1785), duchess of Portland; the manuscripts were sold by the Countess and the Duchess in 1753 to the nation for £10,000 (a fraction of their contemporary value) under the Act of Parliament that also established the British Museum; the Harley manuscripts form one of the foundation collections of the British Library.
