ff. 2r-6v: Chronicle of the see of Cologne to 1237, with the rubric: beginning: 'Pontificum gesta brevitate profatur honestate urbis Agrippine discreto singula fine / Stringens atque premens dumtaxat pagina presens'; continued by 13th-century hands on ff. 6r-6v.

Dimensions: 265 x 180 mm (200 x 130 mm; ff. 2r-6v written in 2 columns).

Foliation: ff. 105 (+ 4 unfoliated paper flyleaves at the beginning + 4 at the end); 2 unfoliated parchment stubs after f. 72.

Collation: Indiciated by quire numbers; each quire has been mounted separately onto a paper guard.

Script: Protogothic, written above top line; written by more than one scribe.

Binding: British Museum in-house; red half leather with the Harleian arms gold stamped on the outside covers; the previous binding (panelled brown leather of two blind-stamped and gold-tooled frames, with the inner one featuring a gold-stamped floral pattern at its corners) has been pasted on the inside covers; rebound on 21 September 1967.

Provenance:

Nathaniel Noel (fl. 1681, d. c. 1753), bookseller, employed by Edward Harley for buying books and manuscripts chiefly on the Continent, where his agent was George Suttie: sold to Harley on 7 July 1716 (see Wright, Fontes Harleiani (1972), p. 253).

The Harley Collection, formed by Robert Harley (b. 1661, d. 1724), 1st earl of Oxford and Mortimer, politician, and Edward Harley (b. 1689, d. 1741), 2nd earl of Oxford and Mortimer, book collector and patron of the arts, inscribed by their librarian, Humfrey Wanley ‘Hunc codicem redemit illustrissimus dominus meus a Nathaniel Noelie Londoniensis Bibliopila, A.D. 1716' (f. 1r).

Edward Harley bequeathed the library to his widow, Henrietta Cavendish, née Holles (b. 1694, d. 1755) during her lifetime and thereafter to their daughter, Margaret Cavendish Bentinck (b. 1715, d. 1785), duchess of Portland; the manuscripts were sold by the Countess and the Duchess in 1753 to the nation for £10,000 (a fraction of their contemporary value) under the Act of Parliament that also established the British Museum; the Harley manuscripts form one of the foundation collections of the British Library.
