f. 213v: A Middle English recipe for toothache, beginning: 'Tak a nott Muge and grates to puydder and temperyd wyth wytte vynegre or red and buyll þam to gydder and putte yt in a fioll'; written in the late 15th or early 16th century.

f. 213v: A draft indenture: 'Jon B. deliveryd to W. Thurkyll de S iij Chartres of egh come to hym þat he culd kep þas dedes his son be home hofe and if he recoveryd þat forsaid William suld deliver þam agayn to Jon Bacett'; written in the late 15th or early 16th century.

ff. 249v-250r: Erased notes on payments in English; written in the late 15th or early 16th century.

Decoration:

Large (2- to 4-line) initials in blue or red with penwork decoration in the opposite colour. Small (1-line) plain capitals in blue or red. Paraphs alternatively in red and blue.

Foliation: ff. 250 (+ 2 unfoliated paper flyleaves at the beginning + at the end); f. 248 is a parchment strip that has been sewn against the upper margin of f. 247v.

Script: Gothic cursive.

Binding: Post-1600 Harleian binding of brown speckled leather with the initials 'M.B.' (Museum Brittanicum) gold stamped on the upper outside cover.

Provenance:

Robert Burscough (b. 1651, d. 1709), archdeacon of Barnstaple: acquired from him for the Harley library on 17 May 1715 (see Diary, ed. by Wright and Wright (1966), I, p. 11 n. 6; Wright, Fontes Harleiani (1972), p. 87).

The Harley Collection, formed by Robert Harley (b. 1661, d. 1724 ), 1st earl of Oxford and Mortimer, politician, and Edward Harley (b. 1689, d. 1741), 2nd earl of Oxford and Mortimer, book collector and patron of the arts, inscribed as usual by their librarian Humfrey Wanley, '17 Maij 1715' (f. 1r).

Edward Harley bequeathed the library to his widow, Henrietta Cavendish, née Holles (b. 1694, d. 1755) during her lifetime and thereafter to their daughter, Margaret Cavendish Bentinck (b. 1715, d. 1785), duchess of Portland; the manuscripts were sold by the Countess and the Duchess in 1753 to the nation for £10,000 (a fraction of their contemporary value) under the Act of Parliament that also established the British Museum; the Harley manuscripts forms one of the foundation collections of the British Library.
