This manuscript contains a copy of the Chroniques des roys, ducs et princes de Bretaigne (Chronicles of the Kings, Dukes and Princes of Brittany), written by Pierre Le Baud (b. 1458, d. 1505), a French clergyman and historian.

The text is dedicated to Anne of Brittany (b. 1477, d. 1514), wife of Louis XII (r. 1498-1515), king of France.

Decoration:

Full border in colours and gold with the arms of Anne of Brittany, birds, fruit, foliate motifs, and a large initial 'A' (f. 1r). Large faceted initials in colours, gold, and silver with floral or foliate motifs at the beginning of each chapter (e.g. 4v, 18r, 28r, 36r, 37v, 39v, 42r, 44r, 49r, 51v, etc). Small initials in gold on red or in silver on blue panels. Rubrics in red. Ruled in red.

Dimensions: 360 x 250 mm (text space: 240 x 170 mm) in two columns.

Foliation: ff. 357 (+ 9 unfoliated paper flyleaves at the beginning and 38 unfoliated paper flyleaves at the end).

Script: Gothic cursive.

Binding: Post-1600. Red leather with gold tooled medallions on upper and lower covers of two lions rampant supporting the coat of arms of Louis Henri de Loménie, comte de Brienne; marbled endpapers; gilt edges.

Custodial History:

Origin: France, Central (Paris).

Provenance:

Anne of Brittany (b. 1477, d. 1514), wife of Louis XII, King of France: her arms, crowned and surrounded by a cordelière (f. 1r); the text is dedicated to her as Queen of France (f. 1r).

The library at Château d’Anet: its mark, partially trimmed (f. 1r, left-hand upper margin).

Louis Henri de Loménie (b. 1635, d. 1698), comte de Brienne: his armorial binding (a catalogue of his books dated 1656 features in Harley 4455, ff. 185r-238v).

The Loménie de Brienne family: sold by the son of Louis Henri de Loménie through the London bookseller James Woodman on 18 May 1724 to Edward Harley, his sale, lot 1206 (see Wright, Fontes Harleiani (1972), pp. 225-26).

The Harley Collection, formed by Robert Harley (b. 1661, d. 1724), 1st earl of Oxford and Mortimer, politician, and Edward Harley (b. 1689, d. 1741), 2nd earl of Oxford and Mortimer, book collector and patron of the arts, inscribed as usual by their librarian, Humfrey Wanley ‘18 die Maij, A.D. 1724’ (f. [ii]r).Edward Harley bequeathed the library to his widow, Henrietta Cavendish, née Holles (b. 1694, d. 1755) during her lifetime and thereafter to their daughter, Margaret Cavendish Bentinck (b. 1715, d. 1785), duchess of Portland; the manuscripts were sold by the Countess and the Duchess in 1753 to the nation for £10,000 (a fraction of their contemporary value) under the Act of Parliament that also established the British Museum; the Harley manuscripts form one of the foundation collections of the British Library.
