Three-sided border in colours and gold with rinceaux and floral motifs, a coat of arms sketched in brown ink in the lower margin, and a historiated initial of a scribe seated at a lecturn (f. 1r). 40 historiated initials in colours and gold of the kings and queens of France (ff. 20r, 21v, 25r, 31r, 32v, 33r, 40r, 42v, 46v, 50r, 51v, 52r, 54r, 58r, 61v, 85v, 91v, 92r, 94v, 95r, 95v, 96r, 96v, 99r, 101v, 103r (x 2), 104v, 107r, 109v, 117r, 123v, 125v, 134v, 183r, 185v, 203v, 210v, 223r, 224r). 1 large puzzle initial in red and blue with pen-flourishing in the same colours (f. 19v). Large plain initials in blue or red.

Pierre Peygne de Lucoy (?): inscribed, 'Le present livre apartient a pierre peygne de Lucoy achapte Lay 1544' (ff. 109v, 117r, 123v, 134v, 210v, 223r, 224r).
Additional inscriptions relating to ownership (ff. 125r, 148v, 156v, 206v).
Louis Henri de Loménie (b. 1635, d. 1698), comte de Brienne: his armorial binding (a catalogue of his books dated 1656 features in Harley 4455, ff. 185-238).
The Loménie de Brienne family: sold by the son of Louis Henri de Loménie through the London bookseller James Woodman on 18 May 1724 to Edward Harley, his sale, lot 73 (see Wright 1972).
The Harley Collection, formed by Robert Harley (b. 1661, d. 1724), 1st earl of Oxford and Mortimer, politician, and Edward Harley (b. 1689, d. 1741), 2nd earl of Oxford and Mortimer, book collector and patron of the arts, inscribed as usual by their librarian, Humfrey Wanley ‘18 die Mensis Maij, A.D. 1724’ (f. [iir]).
Edward Harley bequeathed the library to his widow, Henrietta Cavendish, née Holles (b. 1694, d. 1755) during her lifetime and thereafter to their daughter, Margaret Cavendish Bentinck (b. 1715, d. 1785), duchess of Portland; the manuscripts were sold by the Countess and the Duchess in 1753 to the nation for £10,000 (a fraction of their contemporary value) under the Act of Parliament that also established the British Museum; the Harley manuscripts form one of the foundation collections of the British Library.
