Augustine, Fragment from De civitate Dei; Bede, Expositio actuum apostolorum; De fide Sanctae Trinitatis et de incarnatione Christi and other Alcuin's works
- Scope & Content:
-
This manuscript consists of three parts of different origin and period, perhaps bound together in the 13th century in Carcassone, according to Knibbs and Matter, Alcuini (2012).
Laistner, 'The Spanish Archetype of MS Harley 4980' (1936) argues that 'textual and orthographic peculiarities' in this copy of Bede's Commentary on Acts are due to a Visigothic exemplar.
The first part (ff. 1r-2v) was produced in Corbie in the late 8th century. The 2nd part (ff. 3r-75v) containing Bede's treatise was written in south of France in the 2nd half of the 9th century. The last part (ff. 76r-143v) was composed around Tours in the 1st half of the 9th century.
Contents:
ff. 1r–2v: St Augustine, Fragment of De civitate Dei (The City of God).
ff. 3r–75v: Bede, Expositio actuum apostolorum.
ff. 76r–143v: Alcuin, De fide Sanctae Trinitatis et de incarnatione Christi; Alcuin, Invocatio ad Sanctam Trinitatem; Alcuin, Questiones de Sancta Trinitate; Alcuin, De animae ratione: liber ad Eulaliam virginem.

The Harley Collection, formed by Robert Harley (b. 1661, d. 1724), 1st earl of Oxford and Mortimer, politician, and Edward Harley (b. 1689, d. 1741), 2nd earl of Oxford and Mortimer, book collector and patron of the arts.
Edward Harley bequeathed the library to his widow, Henrietta Cavendish, née Holles (b. 1694, d. 1755) during her lifetime and thereafter to their daughter, Margaret Cavendish Bentinck (b. 1715, d. 1785), duchess of Portland; the manuscripts were sold by the Countess and the Duchess in 1753 to the nation for £10,000 (a fraction of their contemporary value) under the Act of Parliament that also established the British Museum; the Harley manuscripts form one of the foundation collections of the British Library.
