Script: 16th-century cursive.
Binding: Post-1600: panelled brown calf with two frames from double fillets in blind, with the outer frame from double fillets in blind and the central frame from two rows of double fillets in blind intersected by a frame made with 'tooth'-shaped rolls; the outer corners of central frame decorated with floral motifs with small tools in blind; the spine is gold stamped with the Harleian shelfmark and the old title: 'Misselanys'.

Provenance:
Henry Powle (bap. 1630, d. 1692) of Shottesbrook, Berkshire, Master of the Rolls (1690) and Speaker of the Convention Parliament (1688): his signature an a memorandum by Thomas Baker (see below) on him on the inside of the upper cover: 'The same, I suppose, that was Speaker in the Convention. His hand is known by the Members of that Convention' (see Wright, Fontes Harleiani (1972), p. 278).
Thomas Baker (b. 1656, d. 1740), nonjuring Church of England clergyman and antiquary, Fellow of St John's College Cambridge 1680-1717: memorandum in his hand on the paper pastedown on the inside upper cover (see Wright, Fontes Harleiani (1972), p. 60).
The Harley Collection, formed by Robert Harley (b. 1661, d. 1724), 1st earl of Oxford and Mortimer, politician, and Edward Harley (b. 1689, d. 1741), 2nd earl of Oxford and Mortimer, book collector and patron of the arts.
Edward Harley bequeathed the library to his widow, Henrietta Cavendish, née Holles (b. 1694, d. 1755) during her lifetime and thereafter to their daughter, Margaret Cavendish Bentinck (b. 1715, d. 1785), duchess of Portland; the manuscripts were sold by the Countess and the Duchess in 1753 to the nation for £10,000 (a fraction of their contemporary value) under the Act of Parliament that also established the British Museum; the Harley manuscripts form one of the foundation collections of the British Library.
