A composite volume of miscellaneous verse, drama, orations and other texts in various hands. Cited in the Index of English Literary Manuscripts as the 'Harley Satires MS'.
ff. 1r–3v: A Latin oration given at Merton College, Oxford, entitled ‘In collegio Merton Oxon. […], 16 October 1725.
ff. 4r–11v: Extracts from various books and dialogues, and copies of orations, in Latin and English. It includes:
f. 9r: Latin speech by Elizabeth I, rebuking the Polish ambassador Paul Dzialynski in 1587. Dated ‘1597 v[e]l 1598’, and beginning ‘O quam decepta fui, expectavi legationem, tu vero.’
ff. 9r–v: Latin speech by Elizabeth I, delivered at Oxford University in 1592. ‘Oratio Rne Elizabeth ad academicos Oxonienses Sabita 29. Septembr 1592’, beginning ‘Merita et gratitudo vestra, sic meam rationem captivam duxerunt’.
f. 10r: English prayer by Elizabeth I. ‘A praier of the Quene after the Launchinge to sea of thenglysh Navye by the augst hes therle of Esex in June 1596. ao R ... 38’. Beginning ‘Maker & guider of all of all o[u]r worlde masse’.
ff. 12r–26v: Letters, poems, declamations and translations by Milo Hobart, dated 1613, London. It includes Latin letters and poems addressed to fellow pupils (‘condiscipuli’), many of which concern studying diligently and living virtuously; an English translation from Horace’s Ars poetica (f. 12v), biblical translations and paraphrases in Greek, Latin and French, and declamations on academic subjects.
ff. 27r–81v: An English tragedy in 5 acts, entitled ‘Pelopidarum Secunda’ [c. 1590–1600?].
ff. 82r–94v: Short summaries of the Psalms in rhyming verses, entitled ‘The Contents of Davids Psalmes’.
ff. 95r–100v: Copies of 3 satires by John Donne, entitled: ‘Jhon. Dunne his Satires Anno Domini 1593’, with the date 16 October 1725. It includes:
ff. 96r–97r: [Satire 1]. Begins, ‘Away thou changling motley humorist’.
ff. 97v–98v: ‘Sat. 2da’ [Satire 2]. Begins, ‘Sr though (I thanke God for it) I do hate’.
ff. 99r–100v: ‘Sat. 3. Of Religion’ [Satire 3]. Begins, ‘Kind pity choakes my spleene, brave scorne forbids’.
f. 101v: Pen-trials.
ff. 102r–112r: Another copy of the Psalm verse summaries at ff. 82r–94v, more fairly transcribed. Entitled ‘The Arguments of Davids Psalmes’.
ff. 113r–148v: A verse paraphrase of the Book of Proverbs, in rhyming couplets. Title: ‘A Paraphrase vpon the Proverbs’. Inscribed at the bottom of f. 148v: ‘September 8th 1645. Immprimatur Joseph Caryl’.
f. 149r: Faded note ‘The Proverbs of Salomon paraphrased in Meeter by [Maior Tho. Hayney?]’; at the bottom, deleted, ‘Mr Griffith in the old Bayliff'.

ff. 1–3, 27–81, and 113–148, were acquired by Humfrey Wanley and are inscribed with the date '16 October 1725'.
The Harley Collection, formed by Robert Harley (1661–1724), 1st earl of Oxford and Mortimer, politician, and Edward Harley (1689–1741), 2nd earl of Oxford and Mortimer, book collector and patron of the arts.
Edward Harley bequeathed the library to his widow, Henrietta Cavendish, née Holles (1694–1755) during her lifetime and thereafter to their daughter, Margaret Cavendish Bentinck (1715–1785), duchess of Portland; the manuscripts were sold by the Countess and the Duchess in 1753 to the nation for £10,000 under the Act of Parliament that also established the British Museum; the Harley manuscripts form one of the foundation collections of the British Library.
