This composite manuscript contains three parts that were produced separately.
The first part (ff.1r-45v) was transcribed in 1569.
The second part (ff. 46r-81r) was perhaps written in the second quarter of the 17th century.
The third part (ff. 83r-110r) was written in the 17th century, after 1623-1624.
Contents:
ff. 1r-45v: Transcripts of law cases from the reigns of 6 Edward VI [1552/3] and 1-5 Philip II and Mary I [1553-1558]. Written in Law French by William Dalison (b. c. 1518, d. 1558), Justice of the King's Bench, Member of Parliament, Knight of the Bath; transcribed by William Lamberd in 1569 (f. 14r: 'Guiliielmus Lamberdus transcripsit 1569' ; and f.45v: 'huiusque ex libro manu William Dallison conscript - Wilelmus Lambert ex[…]avit 1569').
ff. 46r-81r: Descriptions in English of the men at the court of Queen Elizabeth I, including figures such as Nicholas Bacon, William Cecil, Walter Raleigh and Philip Sidney, then all deceased; perhaps written in the 2nd quarter of the 17th century.
ff. 83r-110r: 'Lectura Johannis Bancks super Statutum 21 Jacobi, Cap. 16. Of Limitation of Actions'; written in French.

Foliation: ff. 1* + 110 (+ 2 unfoliated paper flyleaves at the beginning + 1 at the end); f. 1* is a paper leaf; 1 unfoliated paper pastedown on f. 1*recto (Harleian shelfmark and the inscription 'Law Cases etc.' in pencil).
Collation: Each leaf has been mounted separately onto a paper guard.
Script: 16th- and 17th-century script.
Binding: British Museum in-house; purple half leather binding with the Harleian arms gold-stamped on the outside covers.

Provenance:
John Anstis the Elder (b. 1669, d. 1744), herald and antiquary: his name inscribed on ff. 1*recto, 46r, and 82r (see Wright, Fontes Harleiani (1972), p. 51).
The Harley Collection, formed by Robert Harley (b. 1661, d. 1724), 1st earl of Oxford and Mortimer, politician, and Edward Harley (b. 1689, d. 1741), 2nd earl of Oxford and Mortimer, book collector and patron of the arts, inscribed by Humfrey Wanley, Keeper of the Harleian Library on ff. 1*recto, 46r, 52r, and 82r: 'Mr Anstis, A.D. 1719'.
Edward Harley bequeathed the library to his widow, Henrietta Cavendish, née Holles (b. 1694, d. 1755) during her lifetime and thereafter to their daughter, Margaret Cavendish Bentinck (b. 1715, d. 1785), duchess of Portland; the manuscripts were sold by the Countess and the Duchess in 1753 to the nation for £10,000 (a fraction of their contemporary value) under the Act of Parliament that also established the British Museum; the Harley manuscripts form one of the foundation collections of the British Library.
