This manuscript contains a collection of heraldic and historical texts that were produced separately. The different components date from the late 16th century and early 17th century.

f. 1*recto (parchment pastedown): '1565 Rychmond Herould'.
ff. 1r-75r: 'The Plea betweene the Advocate of the Bacheler knightes Playntifes and the Antadvocate for the Knightes of the Bath defendant'; ending: 'ffrom my howse in Clarkenwell greene, this xiij of Maye 1605'; signed 'your in all offices of kindnesse Francis [...] lancaster - Tandem aliquando in meliora'.
ff. 76r-99v; 'The Statutes and ordenaunces of the most noble ordre of the Gartyer Refourmed Explayned Declared and Renued by the most hygh most excellent and moste puyssant prynce Henry the viijte by the grace of god kyng of England and of ffrance defensour of the fayth and Lorde of Ireland etcaeterea'.
ff. 102r-124v: A list of knights made from the reign of King Henry 6 until that of Queen Elizabeth 'into the yeare 1584'.
ff. 125r-128r: 'The names of Baronetes made by his Majestie at severall times'.
ff. 129r-130v: 'The names of all the knightes of the Garter as they were created in every severall Kinges Raignes'.
ff. 131r-132v: 'Mr Agards [Arthur Agard] opinion upon several Questions propounded by the College of Antiquaries [...] 1615'.
ff. 133r-140v: A collection of English tracts, including one entitled 'Of the antiquity of Stewards in England' [dated 4 Junij 1603], and another 'Of the Antiquity of Armes in England' [dated 2 November 1598], '

ff. 142r-168r: 'Noates of Patentes taken in the Rolles of Judges, Serieants at Law Noble creations, Officers Patents Heralds Patents, Prclamantions and Barronets also'.
f. 169v (paper pastedown): A note on 'Charles Stewart .2. son of James King of Great Brittagne'.
ff. 170r-174v: 'Creationes per dominum Regem Jacobum nobilium'; with the name 'Mr Benbowe' written on f. 170r; the lists go up to the year 1625.
ff. 175r-180r: 'Tabula Alphabettica Justitiariorum vtriusque Banci, Justiciarorum Itinerantium, Baronum De Scacario, Servientium ad legem, Heraldorum Baliorum: videlicet Comitum Marchioum Baronum etcaetara'.
ff. 181r-185v: 'Proclamations Regal from the first yere of the reigne of Kinge Henry 7th anno Domini 1485 unto the 19th yere of the reign of Kinge James the first anno 1621'.
f. 186v: Notes, beginning: 'King Henry the 8 by his letters patentes bearing date the [...] of [...] Anno 35 did erect the office of Minister of the Ordinance generall and create the first Officer there'.
ff. 187r-195v: 'Insignia Armorum Nobilium et Aliorum in Com. Cantij'; preceded by 'An Alphabeticall table of the Nobility and Gentry of the County of Kent'; followed by coats of arms of Kentish nobility, with the heading: 'The Knights are placed accoridng to their antiquity in Knighting'; and ending with another table listing the knights 'which are in the table to Mr Lillies booke intitled Index Genealoginis de diversis familijs in Com. Cantij but are not in the booke tituled Insignia Armorum Nobilium et Generosorum in Com. Cantij in toto 378 in 14 paginis'.

f. 234v: Fragment of an indenture in English concerning 'Edward, Lord Morley, Baron of Rye' [Edward Parker (b. c. 1550, d. 1618), 12th Baron Morley], 'John Gardiner' and 'William, Lord Mounteagle' [William Parker (b. 1575, d. 1622), 4th Baron Monteagle], written on parchment with openings perhaps used for a seal; continued on f. 252r.
ff. 236r-250r: A survey of Essex, with copies of charters in Latin.
f. 251v: A note on a 'free Chappell called Ramsden Barringtons' at Ramsden Bellhouse, Essex, dated 18 August 1606.

Provenance:
Nicholas Jekyll of Castle Hedingham, Essex: grandson of Thomas Jekyl (b. 1570, d. 1653), the antiquary, owned ff. 103r-130v: his ownership inscription on f. 103 (upper margin): 'This manuscript belongs to Nicholas Jekyll of Castle [crossed out 'Hed'] Heningham in Essex'. This manuscript is not listed under his entry in Wright, Fontes Harleiani (1972), p. 204.
The Harley Collection, formed by Robert Harley (b. 1661, d. 1724), 1st earl of Oxford and Mortimer, politician, and Edward Harley (b. 1689, d. 1741), 2nd earl of Oxford and Mortimer, book collector and patron of the arts.
Edward Harley bequeathed the library to his widow, Henrietta Cavendish, née Holles (b. 1694, d. 1755) during her lifetime and thereafter to their daughter, Margaret Cavendish Bentinck (b. 1715, d. 1785), duchess of Portland; the manuscripts were sold by the Countess and the Duchess in 1753 to the nation for £10,000 (a fraction of their contemporary value) under the Act of Parliament that also established the British Museum; the Harley manuscripts form one of the foundation collections of the British Library.
