This manuscript contains an imperfect copy of Praeparatio Evangelica (Preparation of the Gospels), a work of Christian apologetics written by the historian Eusebius of Caesarea (b. 260/265, d. 339/340).
Contents:
ff. 1r-131r: Eusebius of Caesarea, Praeparatio Evangelica, Bks. III-XIV,imperfect at the beginning.
f. 131v is blank.
Decoration:
White vine initials in gold and colours at the beginning of each book (ff. 8v, 18v, 27v, 44r, 56v, 71r, 79v, 90r, 104v, 113r). Numerous smaller 'champ' initials. Rubrics in red.

Dimensions: 235 x 215 mm (written space: 120 x 145 mm).
Foliation: ff. 1* + 131 (+ 3 unfoliated paper flyleaves at the beginning and 4 at the end).
f. 1* is a paper flyleaf. The manuscript has been severely trimmed on the lower edge.
Script: Humanistic.
Binding: British Museum in-house. Rebound in 1972. Red half-leather binding, with the Harleian armorial bookplate, gold-stamped on the upper and lower covers.

Provenance:
Written by Fray Martin: his colophon, 'Fray Martin criado de M[...] Torrella scripsit feliciter' (f. 131r).
The Jesuit College in Agen (Lot-et-Garonne, France), maintained by the Jesuits from 1591 to 1762: inscribed, 17th century 'Colleg. Agen. Socie. Jesu. Catal. Inscrip.' (f. 1r).
The Harley Collection, formed by Robert Harley (b. 1661, d. 1724), 1st earl of Oxford and Mortimer, politician, and Edward Harley (b. 1689, d. 1741), 2nd earl of Oxford and Mortimer, book collector and patron of the arts. Edward Harley bequeathed the library to his widow, Henrietta Cavendish, née Holles (b. 1694, d. 1755) during her lifetime and thereafter to their daughter, Margaret Cavendish Bentinck (b. 1715, d. 1785), duchess of Portland; the manuscripts were sold by the Countess and the Duchess in 1753 to the nation for £10,000 (a fraction of their contemporary value) under the Act of Parliament that also established the British Museum; the Harley manuscripts form one of the foundation collections of the British Library.
