Loys Papon, Discours à Lesdiguières

This manuscript is an autograph copy of Discours à Lesdiguières, a poem written by Loys Papon (b. 1539, d. 1499), a French playwright and prior of Marcilly. It features a dedication (ff. 3r-4r) from Papon to a certain 'M de Lesdiguières', who can be identified as François de Bonne, (b. 1543, d. 1626), duke of Lesdiguières and later constable of France. The poem is a panegyric, written in praise of Lesdiguières, particularly his deeds during the French Wars of Religion.

Decoration:
The arms of François de Bonne, duke of Lesdiguières with crest in colours (f. 1v). Title page in colours and gold with full frame in foliate design, two medallions historiated with a knight in classical armour with trophies and a classical bust in profile in colours and gold (f. 2r). 2 portraits in colours and gold of de Bonne (f. 2v) and Henri IV, king of France (f. 4v). Full frames in foliate design in colours and gold with historiated medallions including classical busts in profile (ff. 3r-4v, 23r), Victory standing on a dolphin (f. 5r), soldiers, knights, dignitaries and courtisans on foot or on horseback (ff. 5r-8v, 9v-11v, 12v-16r, 17r, 18v), a horse-drawn litter carrying masked figures (f. 9r), a lady in a mask on horseback (f. 12r), musicians (f. 16v), jousting (ff. 17v-18r), farming (ff. 19r, 20v), hunting scenes (ff. 19v-20r, 21r) a horse-drawn carriage carrying a masked figure (f. 22r) and a shepherd tending his flock under a tree (f. 22v). A medallion historiated with a classical knight on horseback sketched in ink (f. 23r).

Provenance:
Written in 1597 by Loys Papon (b. 1539, d. 1599), French playwright and Chanoine of Notre-Dame d'Espérance at Montbrison, and dedicated to François de Bonne, duke of Lesdiguières: his inscription 'À Monbrison par L. P. 1597' (f. 2r; see Wright, Fontes Harleiani (1972), p. 76).
François de Bonne (b. 1543, d. 1626), duke of Lesdiguières, governor of Dauphiné 1591, marshal of France 1607, and the last to hold the office of constable of France 1622: his arms and portrait (ff. 1v, 2v; see Wright, Fontes Harleiani (1972), p. 76).
Jean Jacques Laugier, 'de la ville daix' (Aix en Provence): his inscriptions, the first dated 1716 (f. 23v, f. [ii]r-v, and inside lower cover; see Wright, Fontes Harleiani (1972), p. 217).
The Harley Collection, formed by Robert Harley (b. 1661, d. 1724), 1st earl of Oxford and Mortimer, politician, and Edward Harley (b. 1689, d. 1741), 2nd earl of Oxford and Mortimer, book collector and patron of the arts. Edward Harley bequeathed the library to his widow, Henrietta Cavendish, née Holles (b. 1694, d. 1755) during her lifetime and thereafter to their daughter, Margaret Cavendish Bentinck (b. 1715, d.1785), duchess of Portland; the manuscripts were sold by the Countess and the Duchess in 1753 to the nation for £10,000 (a fraction of their contemporary value) under the Act of Parliament that also established the British Museum; the Harley manuscripts form one of the foundation collections of the British Library.
