Şerh-i Gulistan - شرح گلستان
- Scope & Content:
-
This volume contains an Ottoman Turkish paraphrase of the Gulistān (گلستان) of Saᶜdī by Şemi.
The author says in the preface that he had withdrawn from the commerce of men, and was living in contented seclusion, when he was requested by Mehmet Çelebi, Debir (Steward) of the Padişah''s gardens, who had been for some time his pupil in Persian, to write a commentary on the Gulistān. After some resistance, he yielded to his entreaties, and composed the present work in the space of five months. He states further on, at the end of Saᶜdī''s preface (f 28v) that it was completed on 20 Rebiülevel 977 AH (2 September 1569 CE).
The margins of the text on ff 3-23 contains the initial portions of the same Şem''i''s commentary on Saᶜdī''s Būstān (بستان).
The text is prefaced by a short Latin notice of the work in the handwriting of Salomon Negri.
This manuscript was copied by Ahmet el-Belgradi in İstanbul in 1000 AH (1591-92 CE).
