ff. 1r-10r: Printed shields (20 per page), with the arms of Surrey families tricked in pencil or ink; the latest date in the accompanying inscriptions is 1623.
ff. 11r-155v, 157r-254v: Pedigrees of Surrey families with coats of arms throughout; also featuring copies of charters, confirmations of pedigrees and arms, and other documents (one on f. 19v dated to 1622). The manuscript features several church notes, including coats of arms from ‘the Parish Church of Horley in the County of Surr. the sixteenth of December Anno Domini 1619’ (f. 25v); ‘the parish Church of Cashalton in the County of Surr. taken the 5th of Aprill 1623’ (ff. 30v-31r); ‘the parish Church of Stretham in the Countie of Surr. taken the first of Aprill anno 1623’ [unfinished] (f. 46v); ‘the parish Church of Newdigate in Surr. taken the Sixteenth of Decembr. Anno Domni 1623’ (f. 51v); ‘the Parish Church of Putney Anno 1623’ (f. 67v); ‘the Parish Church of Putney in the County of Surr. 5to Die Aug. 1609 by N. C. Lancaster’ (f. 68r); ‘the Parish Church of Putney 1623’ (f. 69r); Peterborough Cathedral (f. 179r); ‘the parish Church of Chorlwood in the County of Surr. 15 Decemb. 1622’ (f. 184r); ‘the Church of Kingston’ (f. 248r).

Decoration:
Coats of arms, tricked, drawn in ink or pencil throughout the manuscript. The shields on ff. [iva]recto-[ivb]verso, 1r-10v, [10a]recto-[10b]verso are printed. Drawings of seals from charters in black ink (ff. 23r-23v, 50r, 64v, 89v, 219r, 249r). A banner with a coat of arms in black ink (f. 204r). Two patrons from St Bartholomew’s Church in Horely, kneeling, drawn in pencil (f. 25v); a knight in armour from Peterborough Cathedral, drawn in pencil (f. 179r).

The Harley Collection, formed by Robert Harley (b. 1661, d. 1724), 1st earl of Oxford and Mortimer, politician, and Edward Harley (b. 1689, d. 1741), 2nd earl of Oxford and Mortimer, book collector and patron of the arts.
Edward Harley bequeathed the library to his widow, Henrietta Cavendish, née Holles (b. 1694, d. 1755) during her lifetime and thereafter to their daughter, Margaret Cavendish Bentinck (b. 1715, d. 1785), duchess of Portland; the manuscripts were sold by the Countess and the Duchess in 1753 to the nation for £10,000 (a fraction of their contemporary value) under the Act of Parliament that also established the British Museum; the Harley manuscripts form one of the foundation collections of the British Library.
