ff. 4r-15r: Pedigrees of English families, the latest is dated to ‘1572’ (f. 14v); featuring a copy of the inscription on the tomb of Sir John de Freville (d. 1312) in the Church of All Saints, Little Shelford, Cambridgeshire, with the following description of that tomb (f. 7r): ‘In Shelford church Cambridgeshire, on a stone in the wall under an arch on the North side of the church an altar tomb under it having an antique figure of a knight clothed in a warlike habit his head on a pillow his feet on a lion couchant; and a composite arms (20 quarterings) with supporters, helmets and crests, entitled: ‘Complementum armorial Wilhelmi Brooke militis Domini et Baronis de Cobham superstitis 1589’.
The manuscript contains an addition:
ff. 1*recto-2*verso: two leaves from a 14th-century English liturgical manuscript, featuring lections and music; they are briefly described under the record for Harley MS 4031 in the Catalogue of the Harleian Manuscripts (1808), p. 110. The top margin of f. 1r features the following inscription in a 16th or 17th century hand: ‘Cobeham’.
Decoration:
Coats of arms with crests, and one on a banner (f. 4r), tricked, drawn in brown ink throughout the manuscript.
ff. 1r-2v feature large (3-line) gold initials in frames with blue and purple backgrounds and pen-flourishing featuring gold acanthus leaves; small (1-line-) initials in blue or gold with penwork decoration in red or purple; large (3-line) paraph markers in blue or gold with penwork decorationin red or purple; rubrics and four-line staffs in red.

Materials: paper; parchment (ff. 1*-2*).
Dimensions: 400 x 300 mm.
Foliation: ff. 7* + 15 (+ 2 unfoliated paper flyleaves at the beginning + 23 at the end); the two parchment leaves at the beginning have been foliated as ff. ‘1*’-‘2*’ but count as ff. ‘1’ and ‘2’ in the modern foliation; 1 paper pastedown on f. 2v (title inscription and pressmark), and on f. 7r (inscription from a tomb); f. 7* is a paper leaf; ff. 11, 12, and 14 have paper fold-outs; each leaf has been mounted onto a paper guard and has a white strip of paper attached to its outer margin (except for ff. 1-2).
Script: 16th or 17th century script.
Binding: British Museum in-house. According to the Catalogue of the Harleian Manuscripts (1808), p. 333, the manuscript was bound together with Harley MS 4031 in the Harleian Library.

Provenance:
The Harley Collection, formed by Robert Harley (b. 1661, d. 1724), 1st earl of Oxford and Mortimer, politician, and Edward Harley (b. 1689, d. 1741), 2nd earl of Oxford and Mortimer, book collector and patron of the arts.
Edward Harley bequeathed the library to his widow, Henrietta Cavendish, née Holles (b. 1694, d. 1755) during her lifetime and thereafter to their daughter, Margaret Cavendish Bentinck (b. 1715, d. 1785), duchess of Portland; the manuscripts were sold by the Countess and the Duchess in 1753 to the nation for £10,000 (a fraction of their contemporary value) under the Act of Parliament that also established the British Museum; the Harley manuscripts form one of the foundation collections of the British Library.
